I would like to add my thanks as well, and it was good to be able to meet Leo and Darren as well, the first uk members of these forums that I have met.

I have only been home for about 45 minutes, but I'm too tired to do anything but sleep at the moment; I will make another post tomorrow.

I promise you, in the US the live theater people insist that 'theatre' is live & 'theater' is movies, & at the same time the film people insist that 'theatre' is movies & 'theater' is plays, etc.
Both groups also insist that "the other side" agrees to & adheres to whatever convention which they're describing.

Working in both live theatre and film exhibition, let me say that you are absolutely right. Both sides are certain that their terminology is correct.

Has anyone seem a single strip 70mm version of "THIS IS CINERAMA" ? I seem to recall seeing it at the Honolulu Cinerama Theatre many years ago after they stopped showing three strip Cinerama and replaced it with the single strip version. I remember it was not very good despite the fact that the single strip version was in the Super Panavision ratio. Although the Cinerama opened with "THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF THE BROTHERS GRIMM" and than contunued with "HOW THE WEST WAS WON". After the MGM western ended it's Honolulu run, the Cinerama presented all of the three strip versions of the original Cinerama films including "WINDJAMMER" which was photographed in Cinemiracle, a process similar to Cinerama. That was a great show with wonderful visuals and music,

I have a few very magenta frames of 70mm TIC here. It appears to be a horrible composite that severely crops the original image. Only about 2/3 of each side panel is visible and I could be wrong but it looks like the middle panel isn't as vertically rectangular as I would expect. If it's true that they didn't reproduce the full height of the 3-panel image then the middle is going to take up more room than it ought to and leave less for the sides. Not that you're ever going to get that wide of a picture into 2.2 : 1.

On the plus side the index holes line up nicely with the framelines!

If they did a single strip version of "This is Cinerama", wouldn't it have been in Ultra-Panavision 70 (1.913x.868 x 1.25 squeeze = 2.76:1) and not Super Panavision (1.913 x .868 spherical = 2.2:1)?

In addition, if the print was optically corrected, you'll see more squeeze on the far left and right, which is why those panels might look smaller.

You are absolutely correct. I always get Super Panavision and Ultra Panavision confused. What is even more confusing is the name MGM gave the Ultra Panavision process when the advertised the format as Camera 65 when they released "RAINTREE COUNTY" and "BEN-HUR". The interesting thing about "RAINTREE COUNTY" was it's exhibition in 35mm only because all 70mm theatres were booked playing other films at the time. It sure would have been wonderful if MGM had re released this movie in 70mm when theatres became available.

I was able to run a short piece of "TIC" in 70mm a few years ago. The print was faded, flat and is now garnished with vinegar and un-projectable. One interesting detail is that image stability between panels was much better than 3-strip projection.

Not only were the 3-strips original combined to 65mm, but the speed was reduced from 26 fps to 24 fps. Imagine the re-recording work being done for that!

"Windjammer" was also available in single strip 35mm. The anamorphic print I've seen had all 3 panels clearly visible (Again, inter panel stability was great), and the widescreen version (In IB Tech btw) showed only one panel.

I've got some 70mm frames from HTWWW too, and that print seems to be anamorphic. So, apparently, both Super Panavision and Ultra Panavision type prints were made from 3-strip originals.

3-strip combined to single strip

65mm/70mm split to 3-strip

Dick,

A fantastic Sunday at Bradford, thoroughly enjoyed. Tony and Duncan gave a wonderful tour of the Pictureville and Imax. It was really kind of Tony to give so much of his time and expertise, with his wealth of knowledge it made all so interesting!!

Thank you for making the visit possible. I shall look forward to next year to see Cinerama's How The West Was Won, and Imax 3D.
