What type of core was it on? Something else that I saw at the NFTVA was a roll of film, most of it in good condition, but the last 50 feet or so totally gone. They said that it was a problem with certain types of core, the modern polystyrene ones are ok, as are the old wooden ones, but some early plastic ones, I think they were made by AGFA, had a bad reaction with nitrate.

At the time I made the decision to destroy the element, it was on a 3" inert polypropylene core. That doesn't necessarily mean that it arrived on one, or that it spent most of its life on one, though. It was acquired in 1991 and a b/w acetate dupe negative was made the following year. I had got it out to investigate the possibility of having a colour dupe made. The original was toned and we knew from a 1997 test that we didn't have long. Sadly we found that it had decomposed beyond all use. I took a colour still photograph of three mushy frames from the start of the reel for reference, in case we ever want to make a colour (either properly toned or Desmetcolour) viewing copy made from the b/w neg.
