They probably abandoned it after discovering that it wasn't helping them to sell any more sweets. There was a story in the paper last year about market research which revealed that sales of tobacco products rise by about 75% in the 24 hours following 'National No Smoking Day'. My wife is the same way. (Both of us had bad love-life experiences in the past.) The last fun Valentine's Day I had where any kind of Valentine's related stuff was exchanged was in 1980. I've never had a girlfriend and haven't had a date with a girl since 1989 (except for a lunch date in 1992, but that' doesn't really count). The last time I asked a girl out was April 18, 1998. She seemed interested, and when I followed up, she wasn't anymore. That's what I get every time. It's somewhat depressing to be in the mall on Valentine's Day, seeing guys carrying balloons and Valentine-related stuff, and seeing so many couples walking around together. I agree. Basically what is meant by that is I don't want to see those goo-goo eyed couples publicly displaying their affection past the point of good taste. It doesn't go over well around these parts. Anyone could guess Nevada leads the nation in the per-capita rate of divorce. Oklahoma is good-ol number two in the rankings (we passed up Hawaii not long ago). Bad past experiences abound. Divorces and bad breakups are happening among a number of my coworkers right now. It is a miracle I have made it to my mid-thirties without having any ex-wives or child support obligations. Sometimes I wonder if all those divorces are just the same few people jumping in and out of marriages with each other at a very rapid basis. The rest of us lonely bastards just watch the melee from the sidelines. Lawton is especially bad for guys since it is one of the few places in the nation where men outnumber the women by a large margin (thanks in part to Fort Sill). The last I heard, the US census claimed there were 10 million to 15 million more women in America than men. In a lot of cities, women have to live in gyms and diet insanely to be "attractive." In Lawton, a lady can be huge but still wear clothes to show off her bare midriff and even accentuate the beer belly with a gold chain. And plenty of guys will still line up for it. I'm sorry if that sounded shallow and sexist. It's just my perspective as a frustrated guy living in perhaps the worst place any single adult could live. What is it that makes for a bad singles environment? There are the mitigating circumstances. Lots of repeatedly divorced adults have kids who grow up to get divorced even more. Many people in this state don't make a lot of money. Then you have the meth culture. Southwest Oklahoma is the meth capital of the world. OK used to be a big place for PCP production. One fellow was delivering fully 1/3 of the world's PCP out of his house: a converted, subterrainian nuclear missile silo. But then some teen age girl overdosed at a party there and he got busted. Biggest problem that defeats Valentines Day in my town? Women don't have shit for opportunities here. They can wait tables, get minimum wage being a bank teller or doing some other office job or work at the topless bars. It is beyond me how a single mother makes ends meet in this place. Women who grow up in Lawton and manage to escape high school and college without being trapped by drugs and kids usually get the hell out of here. I've got a good job in a shitty town. And Valentine's Day is typically a non-event. At least we have a good 8-plex movie theater here.  |  IP: Logged Gracia L. It truly irks me when I rejected for simply not being built like a waify little pixie. No human being is perfect, and there's a lot more in life to appreciate to go and get all obsessed with physique / appearance! And as I like to say "I'm not perfect, but parts of me are excellent!" I've had it up to here with VD. Spent a very unromantic morning trying to telecine a shrunk, buckled and vinegar-stricken 1964 schools film about safety near electrical power lines (quite grisly and satisfying - the most irritating little brat of all gets electrocuted when he climbs over the fence of a substation to retrieve his football). The public park in which it was shot is celebrating its 150th anniversary soon and they want to show clips from the film in an exhibition. Thanks to a liberal coating of Filmguard the shrunken stock wasn't too much of a problem for the picture transfer. But the track is VD and because the emulsion has faded to pink, the contrast has been flattened, reducing the s/n ratio to little more than a frying egg noise.
