Daryl:
Once I were to install the new network card, set up the little network; I would be able to transfer everything?

I once like people & had faith in the human race, then I meet Joe.

Yet bet -- you can map a network drive and you'll be able to access your laptop from your desktop just like any other hard drive in your desktop. It'll probably cost you less than you paid for shipping on that keyboard too. [Smile]

Thanks again everyone.
Once I pay the $14.99 for the network card & $12.99 for the cable's, I will most likely need help with installing everything, I will be posted question's i'm sure!

A side note on that keyboard Daryl: I got a follow up call saying that I actually don’t have the Complete Care coverage & that if I were to send the laptop in it would cost $700 plus S&H to repair because the motherboard would need replacing as well as the keyboard components. Well, you can guess what I told them! Also, now that they know I have a problem my original crappy warranty is void unless I have them fix it. Ye-yah!

Remember you'll only need one crossover cable if you just want to connect the two computers together.

So I bought a Siemens PCI 10/100 Ethernet Card & Cat 5e Crossover cable. I have installed the card & downloaded the CD-Rom files.
From my desktop I have acces to all my shared Laptop files BUT the Laptop can't get anything from the desktop. My Laptop doesn't seem to know what to do. Do I have to put the CD-Rom in the Laptop too?

Also, I had no idea that I would be able to access my web connection from the laptop on the desktop! That's really cool!

It sounds like you haven't setup file shares on the desktop.

Right click on a folder you want to share on the desktop. If 'Sharing' is in the list shown when you right click, select it and go from there. If it's not you'll have to add 'File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks' (or enable it) in the control panels network properties.

If you need more specific info you'll need to tell us what OS you are using.

BTW, sharing a printer works the same way. Just go into the printer control panel and share your printer the same way you would a folder. Depending on the operating system of the (other) computer you may need to install the printers drivers on the (other) computer when you try to add the printer as a 'Network Printer'. Basically you just run 'Add Printer' and select 'Network Printer' and go from there.

I didn't want to start a new topic for this:

NETWORK QUESTION

I have two computers, one with Windows-XP & one, a MAC with OS-9.2.

What is involved to get these computers to communicate? I have connected a crossover cord between the two & I am able only to share a internet connection.
I again want to access my audio/video files from the PC on the MAC.
What are the chances of making this happen?

Edited because I can't spell!

You'll need either a client for Apple Talk networks on the XP machine or a client for Microsoft Networks on the MAC to use 'file sharing'.

I haven't done a hybrid network in years, so I haven't done it with OS9 or XP. I'm sure the wacko you work with would have an idea how to do it though.

Alternatively you could run an FTP server on one of the machines and connect to it with an FTP client on the other.

They're free... it's basically a driver. See if you can beat me on a Google search. You'll probably win, I'm busy trying to rescue a Novell network right now.

That wacko knows how to do it. He has it set up in his own house that way! That wacko must just be lazy. [Razz]

Can anyone tell me what I have to do to network a Win98 with a Win2000 computer? I know how to network a million Win2000 machines together, but can't remember what steps I had to take on the 98 machine.

That's what I thought!

Check out this:

AppleShare IP6 Info

I only skimmed the first document, it looks promising. If you can't get it working I'll take a look when I have some more time.

Brad, basically the same way. Just make sure you ONLY have TCP/IP installed protocol wise on all of the machines. You might have to manually set either a 98 or 2000 machine as browse master (which one, you'll have to play with -- or it might work automatically). Even if they don't show up in the 'Neighborhood' you should be able to access them by typing in \\207.168.10.x in the browser window.

Thanks!

I will download it all & figure it out.

To guess what the 'Wacko's' response will be: “I don't have enough experience with Windows XP to help Nate!”

I don't have enough experience with Windows XP to help Nate, but I'll try.

There is a not-very-free application for Mac OS 9 called "Dave" that will allow full file and printer sharing as well as all that other crap. Cheap it is not. But it may be getting cheaper since it is almost useless now thanks to Mac OS X. In Mac OS X it is built in. I don't remember the steps to set it up. I'll set it up for you soon. After it is set up you can just put an alias of the Windows desktop on your Mac OS X desktop. Just double click on that and you can see and modify/transfer all of your Windows files. In OS X the transfer through the Cat 5e cable (ethernet) is extraordinarily fast.
