How the @#$! could they nominate "Bowling for Columbine" for Best Documentary? I'm not sure if it would qualify, but I'd have nominated "Kid Stays in the Picture" and a bunch of others ahead of that one.

The Best Foreign Film category is weak. Where's "Eight Women" or "Y Tu Mama Tambien" or "Piano Teacher"?

"Minority Report" and "8 Mile" should have been nominated for Best Cinematography.

And "Catch Me If You Can" should get a Screenplay nomination.

Sadly, I haven't seen any of the shorts, so I can't comment there.

Thank you for sharing my opinion about "Minority Report". I love Janusz Kaminski`s camera work. It is always interesting. I can understand that some people don`t like the "haziness" of the recent Spielberg films as discussed elsewhere. But imagine how difficult it is to create that kind of look consistently for a whole movie.
And yes - "Huit Femmes - Eight Women" was a fantastic film.

Isnt it ironic that George Lucas and his "EPISODE TWO" can only come up with one nomination for Best Visual Effects.. There was a time when his first three "STAR WARS" films would be nominated for all of the technical awards and would win most of them. What a blow it was for him to lose the Best Sound award for EPISODE ONE" to "MATRIX" a few years ago. With the success THE LORD OF THE RIGNS" film is enjoying, I can see Lucas's time has passed. Despite his 'Fall from Grace', he still feel that he has the right to demand how his films are shown in theatres. If I was a theatre owner, I would ignore him and refuse to play "EPISODE #3
and show other films that will be just as profitable if he sitll insist on his all digital or nothing policy. If all theatres did that, "EPISODE 3" might wind up on home video much sooner than expected where his digital images would look great instead of looking like crap in a theatre.

well, I think Lord of the rings: two towers will win for sound, sound editing, film editing and visual effects editing. As far as best picture and director goes I don't know. Chicago may have the upper hand in that one.

The matrix sound was much better than episode 1. I wouldn't reuse to play episode 3 so long as I can project it with film. [Smile]

All I have to say is let the man put out episode 3 because after that. You will probably never hear from him again. [Smile]

#3 will be the best one of the first three. THe one I have been waiting for the most.

Best Picture: CHicago - Shitcago was more like it. My review in the review section pretty much sums my hatred for this movie. If voters were dying to reward a musical, they missed the boat 2 years ago on Hedwig the Angry Inch which had better songs , acting and was visually superior.
The Hours: Great acting, average plot. Lame selection.
Gangs Of NY: I love scoresese movies, but Gangs of NY was just good. OK selection. Pianist: havent seen it. Will soon. The Two Towers- I liked it a lot and while I think it deserves a nomination, I am not all fanatical about this movie.

Overlooked: Punch Drunk Love, Adaptation. Hell, I wouldnt mind even One Hour Photo or the erratic 25th Hour or the imperfect but very interesting Minority Report over the first 2 movies.
Even Catch Me If YOu Can was more entertaining than some of the movies here. If the academy doesn;t mind nominating shallow musicals based on perceived entertainment value, what about action movies?

Best Actors: Liked all the nominees. Glad Gere didnt get it. Wish Sandler or Robin Williams got some consideration. Cage is my favorite on the list. Wouldn't mind DanielDayLewis getting it either despite a hammy performance.

Best Actresses: I thought Streep should have gotten something for the Hours. I thought Streep was a lead in Adaptation. But what do I know. Renee is the only weak nominee here. She was solid at best. she was better in other movies like Nurse betty and Bridget Jones. I find the praise for her baffling. She didn't even look glamorous. Emily Watson was preferable.

Best supporting Actress: No real bad choices here. Kathy Bates and Streep are two excellent choices. I would give the nod to Bates mainly becuase I consider Streep a lead. Once again, not too jazzed about the chicago nods. Zeta Jones did have 2 good song dance performances. Otherwise, she acted pretty much the same way she always has. Queen Latifah was more impressive in Set It Off. She really didnt have much to do in Chicago. I was hoping for at least one of the following to sneak in (not all of them): Samantha Morton from Minority Report, Anna Paquin from 25th Hour, or someone in a similar small but effective performance.

Best Supporting Actor: Cooper is the best of the lot. While he has been great in other movies, he had a different kind of role in adaptation- he exuded charisma in the role. Ed Harris and Walken are desrving too. A lot of good actors here. But this is one area where 25th Hour should have been represented. Barry Pepper(surprisingly, the best presence in the movie) and Phillip Hoffman were both excellent.

Best Director: Spike Jonez got robbed. I wish Paul THomas Anderson was rewarded too. It was nice to see Anderson show some restraint after his last two movies. Scorsese is one of my all time faves, but he was just decent this year. Rob Marshall was better than these guys? Please. No Peter Jackson here? Daldry was not bad, but the choice doesnt nothing for me.

Best Cinematography: This is probably the worst nomination for Chicago. If anything was weak in that movie, it was the less than big musical look that Chicago had. Lots of dull blues like they filmed the broadway play live bored me. Had that stage like look. I wouldnt have given it art direction either.
One Hour Photo, Punch Drunk Love and Two Towers were missed here. The clips of Perditiion I did see showed Conrad Hall to be in fine form. Hope he wins it.Maybe Conrad Jr will accept on his late dad's behalf.

Best Song: refreshing to see Eminem song nominated. never thought that would happen after Public Enemy's Fight the Power never had a chance for Do The Right Thing(i think they made that song for the movie first before the album came out). Never heard of the other songs.

Best Score: except for the Hours score, I don't really recall the other scores. Glass made the movie seem more compelling that it actually was.

Costume Design: all the nods seem fine including that of Chicago's.

Screenplays: I really think Adaptation should be considered an original screenplay. It wasn't like the final product we see on screen is an adaptation of the Orchid Thief. The movie is a fictionalized account of the adaptation of the Orchid Thief. The Orchid Thief is just a subplot. Donald kaufman rocks! Too bad he announced himself unavailable for the ceremony.

As a follow-up to Nia Vardalos's nom for original screenplay, from today's L.A. Times:

Vardalos, who was not available for comment Tuesday, has maintained in recent interviews that the screenplay preceded the play.

But in April 2002, Vardalos told Backstage West that she had started with 20 minutes of workshop material and developed it into a one-woman show seen at the Hudson Theater and two other venues. In a Times interview that month, Vardalos said she did not write a screenplay until after she wrote her one-hour stage show. Vardalos said at the time that never in her wildest dreams did she imagine that her one-woman show would become a movie. "Greek Wedding" has gone on to become the highest-grossing independent film ever made.

There are no written rules to determine what qualifies as an adapted or original screenplay. Each studio submits films in the category it prefers, but it is up to the 12-member executive committee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' writers' branch to make the final decision on a category. All 409 members of the writers' branch then select the five nominees for each category.

The committee decided "Gangs" was so different from the Asbury book that it could be considered an original screenplay. With "Greek Wedding," the committee decided that Vardalos intended to write the story for a film.

"We are not an investigative body," said one committee member, who requested anonymity. "We are taking her word, and I have no reason to doubt her."

The same applies to shallow comedies. "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" is just a succession of banalities and clichés. Even though the story is completely different, it stole a lot of the way it was made from the Australian film "Wog Boy". When I saw it, I had deja-vus all the time.
If THAT is a contender for an Academy Award, then they could also
nominate Vin Diesel as best actor.

I would like to know why Gangs of New York in under almost every catagory [Confused]

.......I'm not saying it was a bad film, but....I think 8 Mile was way better in many aspects...

For the Academy Awards Nominations:

Five nominations are made in categories with balloting for these
nominations restricted to members of the Academy branch concerned: Film Editors for instance, nominate only for Achievement in Film Editing. All voting members nominate for Best Picture. Awards are given in two categories which are not represented by branches: Foreign Language Films and Documentaries. Nomination for awards in these categories are made by large committees of members drawn from all branches.
Final winners are determined by vote of the entire membership.

I happen to agree. I generally don't like Eminen(sp?) But any personal bias I have can be overlooked for a truly natural performance. The film itself is dynamic and has an engaging story that really draws the audience in.

Gang of New York has a visual style that really drew me in (I respond to great visuals) but the story was all over the map, reducing the film to an uncomprehensible mess. I even liked DiCaprio's performance, but I never understood what this film was trying to say.

I hate to say this, but MAYBE Charles is RIGHT! [Big Grin]

What a shame

No French Films nominated this year. Even Pinnochio (Italian) didn't make it in.

Is this a snub for the French given their anti-war stance? never mind next year's Foreign Language Oscar Winner (Un Long Dimanche De Fiancailles) should be along shortly. (and yes Jeunet was robbed for Amelie)
