I don't know how much work you're thinking of putting into the index page for the picture warehouse. Have you thought of making the categories into "filters" instead?
At first, the whole list comes up, pretty much like normal. Then at the top (bottom?) of the page there could be check boxes or radio buttons where you click off the categories you want to see... Colleges, Single Screens, Googolplexes, Private Screening Rooms, etc, etc. The list would then reappear/reload but only those names that fit into one (or more) of the categories would be displayed.
For an example of what I'm thinking of take a look at the new "iPhoto" application that comes (can be downloaded) with OS X. There are a few (major) things I don't like about iPhoto but the filters/categories are one of the two reasons I keep using it. The other reason is that it automatically puts all the pictures I import into folders organized (nested) by YEAR, MONTH and DAY. Finding a particular picture is a SNAP!
OTOH, I would bet that this kind of interface would be hard to design and build even if you did it in PHP.
