Meanwhile, back at the ranch...
The almost forgotten brewers of Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer hired a new CEO who brought in a new Vice President for Marketing. His strategy for revitalizing the brand is not to spend on TV or print advertising. Instead, with almost CIA stealth, he has his reps infiltrate scruffy bars where bicyclists, mostly messengers, hang out, and treat them to free Pabst. The writer in the NY Times Magazine claims that since almost no-one can tell nationally distributed US beers from mega-breweries apart in blindfold tests, their way to increase market share is by creating an image leading to brand loyalty, rather than trying to upgrade product or spending large sums on advertising. The bicyclist sub-culture group disdains advertizing hype, and the brand is seeking an anti-establishment, working-class image. They're keeping the old 19th Century style packaging, the blue ribboned, crowded-text fonts on silver and white cans, and the same generic forgettable liquid within.
While in Brooklyn...
...which used to rival Milwaukie in the number and size of its breweries, all the big ones are gone, the latest demolished to make way for a housing and commercial development. I remember Schaefer, and wasn't Rhinegold once in Brooklyn as well?
