They are not old, (6, 3, and 3) and they sleep for 15 hours after they get off on it. STILL dead) loved kitty treats, but mainly the ones called "Bonkers". If you said "Bonkers" he would come a'runnin' from wherever he was, meyowing like crazy to get his fix. I swear he was addicted. Also John raises an interesting point: a friend of mine has a middle-aged ginger tomcat and black labrador. Catnip Facts: Animal Planet We’ve all seen cats in the throws of a catnip frenzy. They stretch out, extend their claws, roll on their backs and squirm about like they’re crazy. Interestingly, this behaviour takes place for all members of the cat family (felidae) including lions, lynx, tigers and cougars – and no one else. Dogs don’t react. Neither do humans. Surprisingly, the herb does get a rise from rats: they detest it (which is pretty darned smart, if you think about it. Would you want to be around a catnip-charged cat if you were a rat?) The scent of catnip probably has this dramatic effect on cats because it contains a chemical called trans-neptalactone. That's a substance that closely resembles one of the chemicals in a dominant female cat’s urine. So their behavior around catnip is a lot like what their behaviour would be around a dominant female cat in the wild. Catnip is a very good source of iron, selenium, potassium, manganese and chromium. Catnip also contains moderate amounts of other minerals and vitamins. Catnip has soothing and relaxing effect on the digestive system, relieving diarrhea, flatulence, indigestion and upset stomach. Catnip's antibiotic and astringent properties are also eneficial for treating colds and bronchial infections.  |  IP: Logged Scott D. For some reason our cats are just too mellow to even THINK of feeding them kitty-amphetamines. But should I try it? Is the first hit free? Will they become addicted? I give pounce to my kitty because she gets bad hairballs, and it helps...a little...a very little...but better then nothing! As for catnip addiction read the following: Dear Fluffy, On Christmas Eve my owner gave me an early Christmas present of catnip. He held the bag to give me a sniff and I went wild! I shoved my face into the bag and pigged out. Before he could get my head out I already ate quite a bit. I'm not too sure but my owner thought I was hallucinating and basically, well, stoned. I was meowing slowly but with a high pitch (which I don't normally do) and I was staring off into space. Was I basically as he put it, "stoned"? Is there any dangerous effects from over-use? Any addiction? Should I be eating it or smelling it? Thanks. Moonie ---------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Moonie, With catnip, as with all things in life, the best approach lies in moderation. As long as you confine your usage to occasional social or recreational use, getting a little "stoned" once in a while never hurt any kitty. Just be careful not to overindulge as a means of tempering your frustrations and running from your problems. That way will only lead you to the Boots Ford clinic, as full-blown catnip addiction is almost impossible to overcome alone. Be moderate! Check this page out...its so good! I have a shaker can with holes punched in the top that I use to serve the C-nip. All I do is shake some out on the carpet. My 30 pounder, Billy, lumbers into the room, spots the 'nip, and stops, drops, and rolls in it. Then he eats all of the stuff. The other 2, sisters, Seven and Baby, come up after Billy is finished, and roll in the leftovers. Then they all chase each other around the house for awhile. Great inexpensive entertainment for me. After they all pass out, all I have to do is run the vacuum to get the left-overs. If only they made Pounce Catnip flavor.  |  IP: Logged Scott D.
