You will end up far better off then you were before . I have to admit that I've never been canned from a place of employment before so I guess I have that to look foreword to some day. I've been very blessed to have left other places of employment to persue other dreams I've had, and or other jobs of interest to me. The funny thing is that all of those other jobs(Audio Electronics Repair, Optics, Photography, Machining, etc) added up into what I do today. I've also had a couple of employers in which I was treated quite poorly so I made sure I stuck around long enough to leave them high and dry in the middle of a very large job ! Like some of the others have said, I too have never been canned from a job... but have been threatend with it twice recently. I've been at the same job, same desk, drawing and designing the same for 13 years. When my wife and I decided to make the jump into building and owning a theatre, I never realized how much time it would consume. Trying to keep the drive-in separate from the Engineering job is very difficult. Twice within the last 6 months I've been called up front to the boss's office for one of those, "Come in and close the door behind you" meetings. The message from those meetings was basically, "Don't on your Kitchen Table". Meaning... Don't -up and loose your day job that feeds your family, when you can take actions to correct the situation before it gets out of hand. Hey, just think... now you've got time to drive up to Tennessee to check out my rebuilt Simplex XL! See... there's a bright side to everything. I've been out of full-time work for over two years, but am nonetheless working (part-time for now) in a couple of fields that I truly love (forgot for a few years how much I did love teaching and flying). I've been canned a couple of times over the years, but like Mark, managed to leave my last real employer in a lurch, just as they were about to cut me as part of a big layoff. Just heard they're laying off again--boy am I glad to be out of there. Better than making lemonaid, do what one of my old captains used to say: "When life hands you lemons, make Long Island Iced Tea!" Even though our location recently got new photo lab equipment, and our numbers were up considerably, and we made our goals, the company pulled the plug on us. I was the only one let go, and look upon it as a gift! That company was driving me crazy, but I didn't have the nerve to leave on my own. This way, at least I'm getting unemployment compensation. Now the company is upset. The president wasn't aware that they just installed the new equipment, and they've lost quite a few customers, partly because of losing a good location, and partly because none of the other locations is producing the quality of prints that we were doing. Last I heard, the regional manager was angry at the volume of complaint letters from (now former) customers. As far as I'm concerned, this is affording me opportunities in other avenues. Lately, I've done photography for postcards, video work, etc. Now, I'll be able to do more of that more lucrative stuff. AND I've found that selling stuff on ebay isn't a bad way to make up the difference. Best of luck, Sam. During the unemployed period, I helped for free, a small town theater install a Dolby CP-50 system including repairing the cp-50. That in turn connected me with another theater where I did some tech work for money and did a lot of free stuff like putting together and breaking down platters. It was a fun couple months, sorta like a vacation. A tip, I found my new job by going to the library and using a Missouri business guide to find companies in my line of work. Then sent resumes to them. I found no ads for the job I got, it was by sending them a resume. Check out the library in Monroe for listings of companies in your area. Also use the phone book and just start sending out resumes. It took me 37 resumes. At one time my family and I lived in a Salvation Army shelter for six weeks. But I got past it and went on to bigger and better things. See what it is you are to learn from this experience and, above all, remember you are NOT what you do so don't make the mistake some men do and think you are less of a person because you happen to be out of work. At the very least don't take what happened as a judgment against you. Too many people feel like they should be ashamed or did something wrong when they got the axe. Very often these days that is the furthest thing from the case. That kind of thing might be alright for some. But many folks who had GOOD jobs and not just A job have a lot of crap to continue paying for, such as their mortgage, a car payment, medical bills on the kids, etc., etc,. etc. There is no problem paying for all that when you are making over $100K per year. But when some greedy asshole executive sees he'll make more profit for the company by exporting your job to China or India then what do you do? The bank isn't going to take, "but I work at McDonalds now" as an excuse for you missing your house payment. They'll just repossess the thing, ruin your credit and boot you out on the street.  |  IP: Logged
