BUMPING THIS UP [evil]

But, seriously, there *is* something I'd like to revisit:

quote:
"We've discovered something DANGEROUS in our local schools that can KILL YOUR CHILDREN! --- tommorow at 11pm!"
This type of news promo has always irked me. What if my kid dies today because I didn't have this information!? I should sue the station, right?

A lawsuit like that would change the entire way the media promotes itself!

and more importantly, where is the followup if the initial report is discredited? that's never newsworthy, and we're left with just first impressions.

in the same way that a lawsuit is effective whether or not it wins, sensational news is effective whether or not it's true. there always someone who will disseminate it without fully checking the facts.

i was just thinking about how extraordinarily valuable a site like www.snopes.com is. hooray for them. more debunking, less hogwash. also, check out the magazine skeptical enquirer, which does a lot of "supernatural" debunking and promotes critical thinking.

"Is there something in the water in our schools that can harm your children? The story tonight at 11."

This was the topic last night on the news. The BIG story was about galvanized pipes in some of the older schools in the area.

Local news is a hoot. They cant even pronounce the names of the local towns properly.

Back to the topic: (WOW) I suffered through Wal-Mart before Christmas. Narrow isles, screaming kids, people hitting me with shopping carts, or bitching because I am blocking traffic. (Had a nearly-full cart, too!)

Wal-Mart is building a new SUPER Wal-Mart here. I probably won't go there. It's just too crazy in the place. I like to shop where I am not rushed to make a decision. Cheap prices is not the main thing that I look for.
