quote: How was "hello dolly"? I've missed that one the past 2 years in a row now, damn! Was it still in good shape, or has it been messed up.
It looked spectacular. Print was destined for Austin, Texas following the fest.
All of the prints appeared to be in great shape. That shouldn't be a surprise since they were all (except for Sleeping Beauty) brand-new or recently struck. Sleeping Beauty was Disney's archival print struck in the mid-1990s. It's been screened a few times and has begun to show some wear.
Play Time was a print based on last spring's restoration and French re-release. Interesting film that's worth checking out if you get the chance. (It's on DVD from Criterion, but in mono and with, I think, a shorter running time than this latest print.) Despite a bunch of conflicting info "out there," Play Time appears to have been shot in 65mm but printed with mattes on the sides of the frame (in 70mm prints) resulting in an approximate 1.85:1 ratio. Sound was DTS, front channels only, no surround.
All of the prints in this year's fest were 70mm-DTS, except for Sleeping Beauty which was 70mm-mag (Dolby A).
quote: Did the theatre accomnodate for the wider UP70 ratio [for It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World]? Or were they cropping off the sides of the image?
The masking was adjusted vertically to achieve the wider ratio.
