But I personally was not impressed with their antics with the animals...sorta anticlimactic as compared to "Jackass" or their DVDs. Here's why: They found out that the average video-watching kid would switch channels as soon as a song they didn't like would come on, hence the average viewing time for MTV was somewhere around 10 - 15 minutes....bad news for advertising revenue. So MTV slowly began replacing their music content with half-hour "shows," first containing mostly music like Yo! MTV Raps, and TRL, and such, but eventually filling more and more time with glop like "The Real World" and "Cribs" and "Punk'd." They hardly show videos, so now artists have to rely on talent alone, with very little help from a flashy video. These days, they only sign them if they look good. This is extremely factual for country music, R&B and most pop music. Rock is the only place where not so pretty people have a chance at success. Same goes for jazz, but not all that many people listen to it compared to the other more popular genres. To make matters worse, the corporate suits running the music industry have stifled most creative trends to where they're just spitting out derivative forms of circa 1990 music. They expect to spoon feed us all the same flavor of vanilla ice cream and then have the audacity to expect us to buy even more of it from one quarter to the next. That gives MTV even more of a reason to air those dopey half hour shows. Once in awhile, I'll tune into VH1, but mostly keep it on FUSE channel if I want to watch some music videos. MTV and even MTV2 both tend to suck a lot of butt. If it isn't some derivative crud then its more gangsta rap or people dressed up and posing like gangsta rappers. Hypocrisy. I can remember all those congressional subcommittees and Tipper Gore railing against heavy metal music in the 1980s just for their horror show theatrics. Strangely, all those folks are conveniently silent when it comes to the often highly destructive messages touted by a lot of rap. The entire music industry needs a complete style house cleaning. Most everyone knows that. But few want to do anything about it. For the time being I'm not buying or even downloading much of any of that crap. Aside from all that soapbox stuff, Jackass and its variants are still pretty funny. I also think they need to produce some new episodes, but I don't think they need to move on and retire and not show the old episodes. That's like saying they should stop showing the Seinfeld stuff.
