Cohen Jedi Master Film Handler Posts: 975 From: Forest Hills, NY, USA Registered: Sep 2001 posted 01-10-2004 01:34 PM                     I've been summoned for jury duty many times, but used to be excused when I was teaching full time. Now almost no-one is exempt in NYC. I reported to several calls, first sitting for three days at a time in the courthouse pool, and once called for a panel, but excused because it was an insurance case and I was involved in an insurance claim at the time, and thought I might not be entirely impartial if empanelled.  |  IP: Logged Michael Schaffer "Where is the Boardwalk Hotel?" Not a mortal wound. Guy was a friend of mine and it took sitting through the whole day to explain I had just been talking to the victim about the incident. Although it was an interesting case and the victim was an ex-green beret. Took him a long time to heal after several hours of surgery. To the north of the island was a farm where present day Marble Hill and Kingsbridge sections now stand. This area in those days was a farm which was owned by a gentleman named Jonas Bronk. The people would say we are going up to the Bronk's to buy some food. That is how it became "The Bronx." I was born in the Bronx and was for many years a member of the Bronx Historical Society. It would be nice to get on a jiuicy 6 month trial (I work for the public. I still get paid ) Last time I was on a jury was in 1981. It was a murder trial. A 16 year old with no English speaking skills was accused of stabbing and shooting to death the much older man he was having a sexual relationship with. The man's body had been fished out of a canal a whole year earlier but had not been identified until shortly before the arrest, despite the fact of having a past record. I'll drive through there on Monday, now, with a new outlook on the place, fascinating. I can't imagine it ever being farmland, though. Incidentally, as a truck driver -- and I'm sure this is something that won't surprise you -- I've been treated better by people at shippers in NYC and NJ than I have in a lot of places that are supposed to be famous for "southern hospitality". After the English took over in the 1660s, the colony was renamed New York, after the Duke of York. In 1683, the government was reorganized into a pattern still followed, and the state was divided into twelve counties, each of which was subdivided into towns. Ten of those counties still exist (see below), but two (Cornwall and Dukes) were in territory purchased by the Duke of York from the Earl of Sterling, and are no longer within the territory of the State of New York, having been transferred by treaty to Massachusetts, Dukes in 1686 and Cornwall in 1692. (Cornwall County became a large portion of the State of Maine when that state was detached from Massachusetts in 1819; Dukes County is still a county in Massachusetts.) While the number of counties has been increased to 62, the pattern still remains that a town in New York State is a subdivision of a county, rather than an incorporated municipality as in most (but not all) other States.
