He was known for saying and doing stupid things on air, but somehow he is still employed by that station. Registered: Aug 1999 posted 01-25-2004 08:03 AM                     There was a small fire in a motel in Greenville SC this morning. The local newscaster referred to it as a 'deadly wake-up call.' They are still going 'live' to the scene 4-5 hours later. Unfortunately, 6 were killed, with 14 getting burned. The guests couldn't find the exits! I used to work at the old CBS network affiliate in Atlanta. Forrest Sawyer, now with ABC, was the local anchor of Eyewitness News there. He had a terrible temper. But I was MCO at the transmitter, so I rarely saw front-office people or air talent. Made sure that I didn't get into the political issues. Got to see a member of our on-air talent almost pass out into a plate of food at the first 'Fall Season Party' that I went to. That was fun. Wouldn't do it again for the world. There is nothing but back-stabbing and bullshit in TV now. A 46 year veteran of local TV here in Asheville was royally screwed out of most of his retirement benefits because the station was sold to a new owner about 5 years before his retirement. Sucks. EDIT: I have no way to post video to the net. PLUS: the original tape is U-matic. I worked with many reporters and news anchors... some were great, and some were total morons. But, I personally really enjoyed the work and "most" of the people. I had planned to make it my "career" until I found out about 35mm and "Hollywood"! I did have the privilege of working for the best News Director and "person", Bill Fyfe. His mentoring really helped me in my young days of learning the ways of the world and personal values. An honorable and honest man that was super fair, non-biased, and non judgmental. Great traits for a person in general and necessary guidelines for "fair" reporting. I learned a lot from him. I agree with Bruce about not wanting to get into that biz today. That biz, as with many others now, are full of back-stabbers and ladder-climbers at ANY cost. No Thanks! There is a related story about Catherine Bosley, the anchorwoman that went on a cruise ship and somehow decided to get involved in a "strip" show. Of course the pics found their way onto the inet and her boss basically forced her to resign; read: fired her for not being "professional." Moral of the story: The company your work for owns your ass 24/7/365! Ummmm... They just read with a straight face & jerk their heads occasionally to get some movement. Watch local news with the sound down, & wonder how long you'd stay in a conversation with someone who moved their heads around like that while talking. That's one of the reasons they're funny/creepy, it's not natural behavior & so a poor performance. They will say anything on the teleprompter, with the same delivery, straight face, & same rhythm of head twitch & eyebrow raise. One newscaster referred to Mark Twain as the "puh-SOD-nee-yum" of Samuel Clemens, without a bump, while the other folks on camera went into facial paralysis. Another favorite is a newscaster with notoriously bad eyesight, but she's too vain to wear contacts or glasses so she can read the prompter. A report (delivered with the earnest face) on the activities of the Retired Firefighters Association became a report on the activities of the Retarded Firefighters Association.
