I had all the interior walls insulated, but how much insulation can you cram in to a 3 1/2" wall cavity? I know that when I have the stereo playing and I take the trash out to the garage as soon as the kitchen door closes, I can no longer hear the stereo. My house has a live sound because I had the floors tiled instead of carpeted and I don't have a lot of furniture. My garage is about 1' longer than my short 1994 Dodge Caravan. Most families in my neighborhood have at least one pickup truck. Most families park in their driveways because either the pickup truck or both cars will not fit in to the garage because the garage is too small or they have crapped up their garage with junk or work shops. I always park in the garage not because I care that much for Norge but because I don't think that cars, boats, campers or basketball hoops makes for a nice aesthetic. I think by law (or common sense) a garage should fit a Suburban or an extended cab pickup truck. My ideal garage would be big enough for two Suburbans, the lawn mower, trashcans and a workbench. My neighbor can just fit their new Tahoe in to their garage. My father doesn't understand why anyone would want a garage in the first place. He has two homes and neither one has a garage. His house on Cape Cod does have a basement. A basement he understands. Although I don't appreciate the suburban aesthetic of garages all facing the street, the Garage is still one of my favorite spaces in a house. I love all that clear floor space. I have always thought that it would be cool to live in a small apartment above a two-car garage. But I would like that garage in the alley or around the side of the house. I like alleys or in England Muse. If you got the plane and the cars out of the way and finished the walls and built a booth, that bottom garage would make a terrific screening room! I wish I had a garage or even just a parking space. As far as basements go, temperate climates mean no basements. Frosty climates mean basements. Since you have to dig the footings down below frost line, you might as well dig a little further and have a basement. Although I don’t like basements much, I spent some time living in them in Denver as a child. I don’t like the low headroom, musty smells, creeping dampness and small windows. I do like the idea of an underground house. I liked the Hobbit’s house in Lord of the Rings. In California, Texas, Florida and the like most builders don't bother with a basement. It's an unreasonable expense and prone to water infiltration. The just build on top of the earth. The only time you are likely to find a basement in California is when the house is on a hillside and it's a walkout basement. Dirk Pitt lives in a hanger.  |  IP: Logged Daryl C. W. My basement has a 10' ceiling... we just kept digging. I too, used to have a basement when I lived in Michigan. What a waste! The ONLY reason I could see to have a basement is for a S&M dungeon... Ummm IF I was into such things. I'd MUCH rather spread out on ground level for more space and/or a screening room. Give me a flat, one-story ranch-type house to sprawl out in... Oh, AND a *nice* garage!
