Off the island, no one would know Mary Ann because she's stuck on a farm. Ginger would be at all the premieres, surrounded by paparazzi. But I'm old enough to be her dad. Age should not be all that important an issue, at least not as important as a couple both having something in common and going the right emotional direction. But I have seen way too many couples where she is around 20 and he is around 30. She thinks he is really cool because he is a little more experienced and mature than boys of her age, and he is happy to play that role for her. But in reality, he is really insecure, immature for his age and generally has no success with interesting women in his age group because they can easily see through him. So he works hard to impersonate for younger more impressionable girls what they are looking for. In some cases relationships with that kind of age difference do work out nicely, but most often you see that unholy constellation, and that has somehow made it always very suspicious to me. A few years back when I was a little over 30, I met a really nice girl from Latvia (that is a small country on the Eastern Baltic Sea, close to Russia) during a music project and we had a really great time. We had never really talked about our age, so I was absolutely horrified when I found out she was only 18 I had thought she was maybe 22-24. Not because she looked older, but because girls from the former Eastern Block usually are much tougher and more mature than their Western colleagues. I got over that shock, but it felt really strange at first, and I was really concerned people would think I am one of those pathetic guys described above who prey on young naive girls...  |  IP: Logged Bobby Henderson "Ask me about Trajan." There was one couple like this I used to see in our town's local night spots. Every time I saw them they would not manage lasting an evening without getting pissed at each other, they were just that jealous. The lady didn't want her old cowboy trading her in on a younger model, so she hit the roof everytime she saw him talking to some other babe. He sure as hell didn't like her showing attention to some young stud closer to her age. Almost needless to say, their relationship did not last. I have friends who have done the same thing. One friend of mine runs a business building commercial properties. His second wife was just drop dead gorgeous, but quite a bit younger. On the surface, not much in common between them, just sex and money. The marriage lasted only four years. The divorce settlement was quite expensive. This kind of thing has a bad effect on lots of single men and women who regard themselves more as "average." We're not as open minded as we should be, often choosing a more "safe" route with more "safe" people. Out of a sense of self protection, I'm not as likely to pursue a highly attractive woman, thinking she's out of my league. But then I shoot myself down without even giving her a chance to say "yes" instead of the "no" I tend to automatically expect. In a way, I think that's one possible why Mary Ann often gets more votes. She's more the wholesome "girl next door" type who might not be as likely to rip out your heart and stomp on it.
