Back on topic here, I made the trip twice recently, once in march and once a few weeks ago. Definitely get an early start. If you leave from DFW around 6 am you will be in austin by 930 and will skip Dallas rush hour and you wont have to deal with the two lane I35 being backed up. When I went in march, we left at about 5pm and it took about five hours because there were so many people on I35 going down to San Antonio, average speed was about 50mph.

I agree with Chris on this one. Earlier the better, I went down to Houston last year in April at around 5 AM. Almost no traffic what so ever.
