I forgot to mention that Saturday is my "old man rant" day. I actually like Green Day. Quite a bit actually. I have followed them for many years. I was on a young person rant yesterday. Just ask everyone around me. I was even on an old lady rant too! And as for facts on this, I was old man ranting. You know, making up stuff because I wanted to complain a lot for no apparent reason. That's what old man rants are all about!!! And besides, I just wanted some attention. No one fed me my tapioca rice pudding for lunch so I had to blow some steam, ya know! So don't get too excited. Ask anyone here. I am the antagonist of the bunch. Most of the time I am serious, but when it comes to music? Please! I love most of it, even the stuff with messages from people who don't know any better. However I will say this, in all truthfulness, the latest Green Day album is pretty lame, compared to thier other works. Even on its own without comparison, it just seems very trivial in nature. No offense intended, but I just consider them a tattoo-pop band. They're not "punk," at least not the kind I listenend to in the early 1980's. Most people consider bands like The Clash, Black Flag, Suicidal Tendencies, The Dead Kennedys and the Plasmatics as being real punk. But even there, they are a 2nd generation that followed the Sex Pistols, The New York Dolls (and Alice Cooper to a somewhat influential degree). I guess the point I'm trying to make is that mohawks, tattoos, piercings and other seemingly punk fashion statements really don't shock anyone anymore. It's just another costume as far as I'm concerned. Regarding Dave's comments about political statements made by Green Day and other bands, I agree for the most part that it is pretty unnecesary. Few bands are able to pull off the political rock angle without it sounding very pretentious. But I can usually tune out that part of it or just avoid the song altogether. Usually the most successful bands that do it have some general inspiration to do so. The early work of U2 was really good in that they were inspired by the bloodshed happening in Northern Ireland and drawing parallels to the American Civil Rights movement. It usually takes some kind of specific event to spark an inspired song. Look at the Kent State incident. Whether you like Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young or not, you cannot argue away the fact their song about that incident is an enduring classic in rock music. I guess the thing that offends me more these days is the conduct of bands on various music awards shows. Am I the only one who wanted to throw some rotten tomatoes at REM's Michael Stipe on his various trips to the podium? His stunt of pulling off one political t-shirt to reveal another and another and another was beyond annoying. I'd even go so far to say that kind of thing was a factor in REM's downfall of popularity in the early 1990s. These days I don't even watch music awards shows. That's because most of the corporate pop acts today just act like a bunch of arrogant drug abusing sluts. They seem to promote a kind of message that there's something wrong with you if you don't have model good looks and a criminal record.
