An employee of Cinemas 4 in Danville Manor shopping center was stabbed and robbed early this morning by a man who laid in wait after the movie theater had closed, city police said.

Christopher Day, 19, of Lexington, was attacked with a knife and stabbed in the upper chest as he showed a man who had just robbed the theater to a back exit. Assistant Danville Police Chief Jay Newell said Day suffered only "a flesh wound" and was treated at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center and released.

Day called police about 1 a.m. today to report the incident. He said he was making a final sweep of the building in preparation to close up for the night when he discovered a man sitting in one of the theaters. Day was escorting the man to the front exit when the suspect demanded the theater's money, Newell said.

Money in hand, the robber asked Day to show him to the theater's rear exit. Day complied and was stabbed once after he showed the intruder to the back door, Newell said. The suspect then fled on foot.

The suspect is described as a white male between the ages of 25 and 30, about 6 feet tall and weighing 170 pounds. He was wearing blue jeans and a Jackson Hewitt NASCAR shirt, Newell said.

During the incident, a small fire was ignited in a trash can behind the concession counter, Newell said.

The building filled with smoke, and the sprinkler system was activated, putting out the fire, Newell said. It has not been determined how the fire started, Newell said.

"We're still very early in the investigation," he said.

Police say an employee at a Danville movie theater was was allegedly stabbed early Tuesday morning during a robbery of the cinema made the story up in order to cover his own robbery.

Police say Christopher D. Day of Lexington, and manager at the Danville Cinemas 4 in Danville Manor, told them he was stabbed in the upper chest by an unknown assailant who demanded money after all the other employees and customers had left.

However, police now say the wound was self-inflicted and that Day will be charged with falsely reporting a crime. They say that Day is cooperating with investgators, and has returned the $1,350 that he said had been taken by the supposed assailant.

Police also say Day confessed to starting a small fire in the concession stand of the theater that caused the sprinkler system to activate.

Day is expected to be formally arrested Wednesday and charged.

Danville Assistant Chief Jay Newell says they devoted nearly fifteen hours of man power to solving this crime. In the end police say the manager, 19-year-old Christopher Day wasn't the victim, but the suspect.

Police say Day made the whole situation up. Police believe Day, stole nearly 1,400 dollars from the theatre, then stabbed himself in the chest.

As for the fire, police say they are waiting on more information from the fire department.

Police have not charged Day, but say he will face charges of filing a false report and a felony of theft by unlawful taking over 300 dollars.

Police say they do not have Day in custody as of yet, but do plan to serve a warrant by Wednesday.
