You're actually thinking of gangsta rap.

Death metal is not about the glory of killing. Death metal is just another version of metal, such as heavy metal, speed metal, industrial and so on. The "death" monaker describes the manner is which the music is relayed.

I would not classify Pantera as "death metal." Pantera's music was definitely very heavy, but it didn't fall into the speed metal and horror show theatrics that so-called death metal utilizes. The Damageplan CD is less heavy and a bit more "accessible" to more listeners. Dimebag Darrell gave both groups a very distinctive sound.

I agree with Dave, if there is any form of music glorifying killing it is definitely gangsta rap. It really pisses me off to no end how the media and government turns a blind eye to that crap while they've maligned hard rock music in the past. Remember Tipper Gore and the PMRC? Where are they now? Much of rap music these days glorifies all kinds of negative things: violence, mistreatment of women, shameless materialism and even organized crime. There's not many rap groups that promote anything positive or political. Where is Public Enemy now? Or KRS-One? There were plenty of rap groups in the past that had something to say. Today we just have Lil John talking about the sweat dripping off his balls and "skeeting" all over some woman. I think the music corporations have snuffed out a lot of the political overtones in rap and the media turns a blind eye to all its negativity out of fear of being called racist.

Z94, our local rock radio station has been playing lots of Pantera music and taking phone calls from various listeners. Most listeners have called up to talk about the days when Pantera played clubs in Lawton and Wichita Falls and all the partying they did around these parts. The radio station is airing a big tribute show to Dimebag tonight on the weekly "Altered States" heavy metal program. Z94 is also putting together a package of remixed Pantera tracks and listener comments and more to send to Vinnie Paul and the Abbott family.
