Many state restrictions on beer, wine or whiskey sales are enforced Blue Laws that date back to the 1840's. Its not so much that the state doesn't want you drinking while watching football, but 150 years ago temporance movements among educated Evangelical elites formed to get people off the bottle and into the pew. A side benefit to no Sunday sales was circuit riding Catholic priests couldn't buy more wine for late afternoon masses if the morning congregations drank it all. Bigotted legislators loved that caveat.
