I'm trying to decide between a Canon EOS 30D, a Nikon D200 or just spending more on a Canon EOS 5D. The thing that seems most dreadful is the amount of money that will then have to be spent on lenses. Those Canon L-series auto focus lenses can be very pricey.  |  IP: Logged Jennifer Pan THE JEN! The high quality lenses, such as those L-series lenses from Canon, make a noticeable difference. I'd like to at least have a good L-series 70mm-200mm. Their 28mm-300mm lens would be even better. Pretty expensive hobby, but good if you can get paid for the work. Maybe I'll buy a good tuxedo and start shooting some weddings. Don't cinch on the lenses though! You get what you pay for. As far as weddings go...screw that!!! In the late 80s and early 90s I used to videotape those things and I believe I was one of the first people (aside from tv station sort of things) with multiple cameras. I never shot with less than 3, and my top wedding I had 12. Needless to say editing was a bitch back in the day before non-linear editing. Anyway the point is that while high profile weddings DO pay pretty good, it's just not worth the hassle, and what's worse is that when you are done, nobody wants to sit through the video or look at the pictures because you just did all that work for a very limited number of viewers, meaning the family. God forbid something was to happen and you miss the cutting of the cake or something important like that too! Thankfully I never did, but I heard some horror stories from other photographers to the tune of ridiculous lawsuits over it. Oh yeah, and let's not forget the biggest pain in the ass of weddings...you have to dress up too for those things. That's pretty much the icing on the cake as to why I will never shoot another wedding in my life. There is plenty of money to be made in photography if you are truly good at it.  |  IP: Logged Bobby Henderson "Ask me about Trajan." It's a pain enough from having to take photos and video when its someone you know getting married. If I were doing that sort of work professionally I sure wouldn't do it for cheap. The problem is there's not a whole lot of other professional photography tasks one can do in my area. Normally I would be leaning to just getting a Canon D-SLR right off the bat. However, the Nikon D200 has a very cool feature to it not offered by any Canon model. An intervalometer will allow you to shoot programmed time lapse movies at up to 3872 X 2592. None of the Canons let you do that. The only bad thing about the D200 is it doesn't do as well in lower light settings. As ISO levels of 800 and higher it generates a lot more noise than the CanonEOS 30D or 5D. With every D-SLR camera you're having to give up something to get another thing.
