I don't know much about what is going on with Freemasons these days, but it does look to me that it is just an outdated obscure organization now.
However, it has to be said that during some periods of history, the Freemasons played a very important role. Especially in the 18th century, during the so-called Age of Enlightenment, when new ideas of rationalism, egality and humanism were formulated. Part of that new concept of thinking led to modern analytic science, another part to the founding of democracies based on - at least theoretically - equal rights and dignity for everyone.
At a time when most people were subjects of absolutarian monarchies, these ideas were seen as dangerous and spreading or even discussing them was strictly forbidden. Secret organizations like the Freemasons with all their rites and rules were the only places where such ideas could be discussed openly. Those rites and rules were mainly implemented to make sure that nothing of what went on inside the meetings would ever reach the outside world. Many of the greatest minds of that age were members of such organizations, foremost of all the Freemasons.
That is also why US dollar bills are adorned with Freemasonic symbols. The American revolution, and shortly afterwards the French revolution, showed just how dangerous these ideas really were - for monarchies.

Well, that, and they have hidden a vast treasure somewhere in Washington DC. Apparently there is a map to it on the back of the Declaration of Independence. I saw a movie about it. [Wink]

I have an uncle who is a Free Mason and has been for many years. He suggested that I join their circle to network myself after graduating from college. I never took this offer for membership seriously, however.

Last month I took my fiance to the Joslin Diabetes Center at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh. There were Masonic magazines and newsletters in the lobby. Most of these guys were either retired or ready to retire based on the glossy color pictures. I don't think membership in their organization is a priority with Generation X (or even the Boomers for that matter).

My grandfather on my dad's side is a free mason. I'm too disconnected from my family at present time for it to mean much.

I had to laugh when reading about fights between the Knights of Columbus and the Freemasons. That would be like pitting the AV club against the chess club in a high school full of 70 year old men....

This discussion took a negative perspective due to the lack of knowledge of the writers. No, I am not a Mason, yes I am aware that they are a secret socity that apparently has unusual rituals. What seems to have been overlooked is the money that they raise for many charities, not the least are their hospitals for children, particularly for burn victims and the research that is done in these facilities. Never has a charge been made.

If you saw National Treasure you now know that several of this nations founding fathers were masons as have a few presidents and many other well known

The Masons, K of C, VFW, and other fraternat groups are suffering from a couple of generations of non joiners.

My Grandpa is one. I thought about it a few times. I saw it get my grandpa out of a speeding ticket once. Held his ring out when a State Highway patrol pulled him over. The cop walked up and instead of let me see your drivers license he simply said have a nice day and went back to his car and left.
I've been mistaken as a mason many times. I don't know what I was doing but I did something that led a few masons to come up and ask me out of the blue. Organizations can be helpful but I think it's funny how rumours and far fetched stories get started about secret organizations. People have great imaginations sometimes.

Shriners are high-degree (32nd I think, 33rd being the Head of all the Masons...I'm not 100% sure on the numbers) Masons, so only certain Masons are Shriners.

My grandfather was one, as well as my uncle; my friend is as well...I'm still pondering if/when I should join.
