Talk about a "chik magnet..!" They loved them foreign sports cars. TA's and Camaros were like "cats in a pine box" - dime a dozen. 'Vettes, and "Z's" could attact some serious "chik" attention...... Stock HP for a 400 for a '78 TA was only about 185 HP out of the factory with all of that smog crap plugging up the innards. I'd rather would love to have a '71 Charger with that 426 Hemi (which I've drove a few times....WOW!!!) up front before EPA started to screw around with emissions and horsepower. I trust that short block 400 was rebuilt for more HP, and modified to use premimum($$$)unleaded fuel. Did you sell the Blazer? Kinda had to do a new budget on fuel expenses? Apart from 4x4s, cars with engines bigger than two litres are unusual here, and above three litres are virtually unheard of. 1.6 or 1.8 is the average engine size for a family saloon (slightly bigger for Diesel). Given our $8 a gallon fuel price, we don't see many cars like that around here! And the cost of insuring something like that would be in the category of 'if you need to ask, you can't afford it'. Despite having an 11-year no claims record and being in a relatively safe employment category - archivists do not exactly have a reputation as would-be Michael Schumachers - I still pay £492 ($834) a year to insure my 2.0 litre Mondeo. 12mpg sounds scary - apart from the seriously rich, no-one here would consider any car that did below 35 for normal use. (actually it cracks in at 6.56L with that cu.in. size, but it was easier to round it up to the next digit) 12mpg is about right for that size of motor for combination city/hwy driving....as long as the foot on the gas pedal isn't getting itchy to 'slam down on the accelerator' at times. Yea, one night's of work at the drive in is about the price to fill that thing up once, or almost twice a week. Those people driving those 8.5L (525cid) '1969 Tornados and El Dorados couldn't even see 10mpg if they tried. Though the sweet throaghty sound of a Chevy 350 can't be beet.
