For once, there's something from the theatres' side of the story. John Fithian (President of NATO) makes some good comments. Comparisons to 2004 aren't exactly relevent because: 1. Passion of the Christ -- out of left field, $370 million 2. Fewer big-time releases (according to Fithian, a high-profile release does around $50 million on average, so figuring 7 or 8 fewer big releases at $50M each would wipe out our current deficit right there) 3. The movies are crap this year. Last year we were going into Spider-Man 2 at this point, and coming off of Shrek 2 and Harry Potter III. All very popular, well-reviewed movies. What's to compare this year? Star Wars was good, as was Madagascar, but not as lucrative as Shrek 2, and Fantastic Four is not going to do Spider-Man business. I had to throw that quote in there since the last sentence of the previous post made me think of it. And I had to post it because otherwise it would just spin around in my head and make me go insane. I do agree the movies generally suck ass worse than usual this year. We are still running ahead of 2003 for the same 26 week period. My feeling is that 2004 was the peak year for attendance and it just may be the peak year for the long haul with attendance leveling off for a few years bouncing around the 2003 attendance levels for the next few years. And for summer fare, well, all the billboards I've seen throughout NY are touting remakes! Is Eddie Murphy going to be in it? On another note, this morning CNN Headline News was speaking of how "The Incredibles" didn't sell as well as Pixar expected on DVD and that "Shrek 2" was similarly disappointing for DreamWorks. So what does that mean? People are just tired of movies altogether? Perhaps we should return to vaudeville. Our theatre has a stage. How about yours?
