The staff and management are knowledgable about the things they sell, even about all of the components and parts I frequent their stores to buy. The only exception to this is the one in the mall right next to the theatre! Every time I go in there, right as I set foot in the store I'm approached by salespeople: "findin' everything alright? Hey, can I get some movie tickets?" (since I usually only go in there on work-related business, I have my gold Regal name tag on.) I went in there to get _flashlight_ bulbs one time, and the clerk thought I was talking about 120v home light bulbs! He told me I'd have to go to Target for that. Best Buy is kinda funny, too. I was buying a Doors CD there a few weeks ago, and the cashier asked me "Is this their new CD? Mind you I was one of the originals who opened the store, working in that department, and later got the shaft. This fat sweaty moron comes up to me and tries to make a sale on me. I told him "I'm just looking, I don't need any help". Of course he ignored this and started yammering on about the hard drives or whatever. Again, I tell him I don't need any help. And yes, I'm sure. He ignores this and keeps going on about rebates! So finally I told him "I used to work here...In this department. I don't need any help." At Best Buy, you're not fighting for commision. You're fighting for your job! Fun! As far as Radio Hack goes, I get pretty good, honest, service from the one in Los Banos, they know their products fairly well and don't try and bullshit me. But then again I usually know the part number of what I need and/or where to find it. They hardly carry any components anymore. They are into the cell phones, RC cars and tv's now. They should change their name to Phone Shack or something. I remember as a kid going to the mall with my dad and into Radio Shack. They had walls of stuff for the do-it-yourselfer. Not anymore. Now I buy my stuff from places like Newark. Only problem with them is they have a $25 minimum order and you have to wait for it to ship. They had lots of new stuff, equipment and parts, but they also had surplus parts. It was always fun to go see what they came up with. They had different stuff all the time. I went there to see if I could find the speaker plug that would fit a Bell&Howell 179,So took the amp out of the projector to take with me to Radio Shack, the guy who worked at the store I would say he was in is 50's said wow what are all the light bulbs for? I picked up the amp and left. Thats my Radio Shack story. I think the reason was to avoid school teachers plugging a mic in the wrong hole .. real AV geeks would have known better, of course. Somebody probably remembers exactly what size it is, but I believe most B&H owners these days just change it to a standard 1/4" phone jack/plug. Used to have a bunch of 'em here inside Wonderworld, a local chain that died years ago. Those 0.206" phone jacks that B&H used are commonly used as microphone jacks for civil aircraft, and are available at any avionics or aviation supply shop.
