Registered: Dec 1999 posted 01-28-2007 03:39 PM                     I HATE landings...love the take-offs but cannot to this day stand landings... a few I've been on have seemed they must have landed like those last two. My palms are sweating just from watching them. Actually, flying with my wife works quite well as she hates take-offs but doesn't mind landings at all. I like looking for theaters and drive-ins. When landing in Phoenix, it's usually bumpy and you can see the Scottsdale 6 Drive-In on the right side of the plane. In Las Vegas, it's usually bumpy and you can see the Henderson Cinedomes on the left when landing and on the right when taking off. In Albuquerque, you can see the Sunset Drive-In. In San Diego, you fly close enough to downtown to see people in the buildings when landing. At Chicago Midway, well ... you can't see any theaters, but there's always a good chance you'll end up on 55th Street!  |  IP: Logged Phil Hill I love my cootie bug Posts: 7595 From: Hollywood, CA USA Registered: Mar 2000 posted 01-28-2007 05:54 PM                  I agree with Adam...I always like to look at the local landscape when landing and taking off from any airport...been to more than a couple hundred worldwide. BUT! Even though I've flow from and returned to Burbank airport many, many times, I ALWAYS still get nervous when we land on that short 5800ft runway 8. I wonder if THIS will be the time we overshoot the end and wind up on street Hollywood Way or the gas station ...Like several others.  |  IP: Logged Will Kutler Phenomenal Film Handler Posts: 1506 From: Tucson, AZ, USA Registered: Feb 2001 posted 01-28-2007 08:26 PM                     Worst landing I ever saw in person occured at Duxford Air Museum in England. My friend and I took a visit on our day off, which happened to be an EXTREMELY windy day! For whatever reason the Old Flying Machining Company decided to fly their Spitfire. The wind was sooo strong that it was bouncing that plane around like a rag doll. And the pilot had to make several go-around attempts at landing. So, on the final attempt the pilot touched down, caught the left wingtip in the ground and did a 90 degree pivot. This pivot put the plane on a direct path towards my friend and I, who were standing on the spectators side of the spectators barrier and right next to where a PBY Catalina was parked. Both my friend and I had 35mm SLR cameras, but neither of us had motor drives. So we were both snapping as we started running. Luckily, between the both of us our simultaneous shutterbugging captured the entire sequence of events. I wish I could scan and post those pics. Note that it does not have any airline insignia on the side. For a real bad x-wind landing go to THIS site and click on the 2nd one down. Thats a dam good pilot!
