Actually, it is Christmas that should be moved. If I remember correctly, scholars say from the description in the bible, it should have happened in late summer? It's been a while. So move Christmas to the closes approximation we have to it's real anniversary, and change Dec 25th to gift day. I mean, it's already that way for alot of people. I'm not anti-religuios, I just beleive that we should be doing things right, if we can help it. Speaking of doing things right, I'm definatley going to be stuffing myself right this Christmas. I can already taste the cranberry sauce. It's still in its original can shape. Mmmm.

I have to confess that, not being a Christian, I find the whole business uneasy. On the one hand the commercialism - the idea that you'll enjoy yourself and have a fulfilling break in direct proportion to how much money you spend - drives me round the twist; but on the other I feel a complete hypocrite taking part in any of the religious stuff, for the simple reason that I don't believe it.
I think the real killer is that in Britain at any rate, 'Christmas' now starts so far in advance (from just after Guy Fawkes night as far as the shops are concerned) and disrupts everyday life for so long (workplaces stop functioning normally around now, and don't start again until the second week in January), that for those of us who don't have kids or exist in a family situation that makes a big deal out of Christmas, it's really difficult to keep a good humour about it for the whole period. I think the US approach, where only Christmas Day itself is a public holiday and there is at least some business as usual on the days around it, is a far healthier way to do it.
But, all that having been said, have a good one!

I think we should do what Father Guido Sarducci talked about way back in the 70's.
Big Christmas, Little Christmas!
quote: Charles Greenlee If I remember correctly, scholars say from the description in the bible, it should have happened in late summer?
Actually, the Gregorian calendar was set up to synchronize the lunar calendar, which was used to calculate religious events, and the Julian calendar, which was in common use at the time.
The problem was the BOTH calendars were inaccurate The religious feasts tended to drift backward through the seasons because of the lunar cycle and, because of the Julian calendar's inaccurate leap year calculation, caused events to also drift.
In other words, the new year would occur in the winter at one point in time, then eventually, over time would end up in summer.
Then, throw in the fact that the First Council of Nicea decreed that Easter should be celebrated at the same time every year and that it should be celebrated by all factions of the Christian Religion at the same time.
Therefore, the Gregorian calendar set the date of EASTER and let Christmas fall where it may. Think about it... Easter is a MUCH more important holiday to Christians!
So, yes, Charles, Christmas probably didn't actually occur in December but, because of the way the Gregorian calendar was set up, Christmas falls in December.
Then, of course, there's all that talk about the Pope decreeing that Christmas should fall at the same time of the year that the pagan religions of the era celebrated their year's end festivals. There's probably some truth to that but I think it's more like a happy accident. What the Pope really wanted to do was to set the date of Easter.
