Actually my pic is 5 years old. I should update it. I have worked as a projectionist, asst. mgr., manager, and GM for Marcus Theatres for over 30 years.

I must commend Dennis for staying in a business like this for so long, esp with a company that Ben Marcus began in the mid 30's.

With this in mind, this is where working in the theatre business is actually fun and exciting: to work for a company that began as a theatre company by someone who started out working in a theatre as a regular employee, or wanted to begin his business as an "indie" and either remained as a "indie", or grew his business into what can come of today .. and MARCUS Theatres is one of those rare treats that remains with us today.

Also, with all of this, when a person begins a theatre business from scratch like Ben did, he's gonna treat his employees as one of his own - since he wants the quality to keep the business in the up and forward at all times. That owner wants to share his success with others that are in his business so that they can contain and experience the same success that Ben has worked hard for and have testimony of his accomplishments.

Sadly, we're all seeing companies and circuits being developed by either an individual or groups of investors who had a previous occupation of either bankers, realtors, lawyers,large store owners, et.al. and decides to venture out into this theatre market without having a notebook clue on what the theatre business is really like and just either take their previous business techniques and run their theatre company(ies) like that previous business that the individual or groups are familar with, or hire a team of previous theatre executives to run their business.

And what's even more sadder is when the small business owners try to play in the "big lion" game just to be a "big lion" themself, but unfortunately, get eaten up by the "big lions" in this industry.

The bottom lines is all they care about is the numbers ($$$$) that they can jiggle around and play with and the employees are just "tools in the toolbox" to help the owners play that numbers game to their advantage...and they wonder why their turnover rate is so high and especially lose a good amount of good people who really love this business...but had enough of being the "tool in the toolbox."
