It is a touchscreen phone that is running Google's Android operating system. It's touted to be "open source, open platform" so there are no pricey SDK's or evaluation steps for software. I see the Android platform as a healthy competitor to the Iphone. Applications can be made at minimal cost, with less red tape as compared to the "App Store" Prior to 2.0 firmware, I was running a jailbroken phone with apptapp installer (like app store, but with all unsigned code). It had many of the applications that appstore has available. The BIGGEST improvement with 2.0 was the Exchange functions. I thought it looked nice and seemed pretty responsive. And a bunch of people on a linux message board I'm on seemed to really like it. Probably didn't hurt that a lot of them also wanted to get in on the development side and write some simple and useful apps for it. There's little or no text messaging included (I hate texting) but it has like 400 minutes of talk time and unlimited data. Note that if you are in the middle of your current AT&T contract (as I was) you may not be eligible for the upgrade price on the iPhone. You can find out here if you're eligible for the upgrade price.
