In the decade or so that I've been taking internal US flights regularly, I've noticed a trend of flights of around 300-500 miles that used to be operated with 737s, A320s or DC-9s being replaced by regional jets and, in some cases, turboprops.
From the passenger's point of view, the problem with the regional jets is very simple: luggage space. There is simply not enough room in the cabin for a full planeload of passengers to take even one carry-on each. So many have to check it at the gate and wait for it to be retrieved at the other end, which for business travelers that only bring carry-ons to save time, completely defeats the object of the exercise. For the rest of us, it increases the risk of missed connections. Personally, I'd much rather have the turboprops of the sort that Alaska/Horizon occasionally uses between Portland and Ontario than regional jets: OK, they're a little slower, but the legroom (and personal space in general) in economy class is decent and you don't get this Darwininan fight to the death for overhead bin space.
Furthermore, since the airlines started charging extra for checked baggage, I've noticed an increase in people trying to carry on the whole frickin' kitchen sink with them, interpreting the "one carry-on plus one personal item" rule as meaning "two bloody great suitcases". I've even seen some passengers walk on with three large items and the gate agents ignore them, probably because if they stopped and argued with everyone who tried to bend the rules, the resulting delay would make the plane late.
I suspect that this is costing the airlines customers. Some friends recently took the Amtrak train on a visit from Redding to LA, mainly because after all the luggage needed for Mum, Dad and two kids to be away for a week, flying would have cost them over twice as much.
