Lubbock seems to be having an outbreak of fleas. Out here we have ticks.... . We had those back in the Midwest as well but out here they are worse. Ya just have to check your self and your dog when you get back from a hike. It might be interesting to know that there are a LOT of medications that are not good for dogs and cats that you wouldn't think of. "Biospot" and other types of flea/tick medications are obvious but things like eucalyptus and tea tree oils are poisonous to cats and small dogs. We all know about chocolate and I once had to rush a cat to the vet because he ate half a pack of cigarettes. (Go figure! I left them on the coffee table. He must have thought it was catnip or something. ) Eucalyptus oil absorbs through a cat's skin and gets into its bloodstream. If the cat has many flea bites and/or open sores from scratching the fleas, the oil gets in even faster. Now, the eucalyptus isn't IMMEDIATELY poisonous but it builds up in the system. A cat's liver can't eliminate eucalyptus as quickly as a human. Humans can EAT limited amounts of eucalyptus. (Hall's Mentho-Lyptus cough drops.) But a good dose of the stuff in a cat's system can put it in the cat hospital or even kill it! People don't normally think eucalyptus or tea tree oils are bad things because they are "All Natural." Hey! If it comes from nature, it MUST be good! Right? (i.e. - "The naturalistic fallacy.") Nothing could be farther than the truth. I have seen cases where people will go to the health food co-op and buy "Natural" products containing eucalyptus and rub it on their cats thinking they are repelling fleas but they are really rolling the dice on their cat's life! What I'm getting at is that you probably couldn't have known something like this would happen. It is reasonable to assume that a commercial product is safe to use. Maybe it IS safe to use under the right circumstances. Your dog looks like a small breed. Maybe... MAYBE, "Biospot" is okay for larger dogs if you watch the dose. They are larger and can tolerate stronger medications. But, to the average consumer, this is not an intuitive thing. IF there are conditions under which this product can be toxic, the manufacture should tell you. I don't know the whole answer to this question. I'm sure you can see where I'm going. I only really know about the eucalyptus thing from experience because I saw a cat get sick from it. I'm just applying what I learned from one situation in another.
