When my time came after that half century mark, my HMO doc sent me up for a sigmoidoscopy, but a friend of mine who is a doctor said, screw that....if you are going to go in for the procedure, make them give you a colonoscopy instead. If they are going to stick a camera up your ass, it makes no sense stopping halfway up -- do the whole nine yards (so to speak) and have then look at everything.
BTW, you probably have heard all about this new "non-invasive" virtual colonoscopy where they just do it with some type of MRI imaging technology. Problem with that is, unlike a colonoscopy, they can just look at what's in there. If there are polyops, then you have to go in and do the colonoscopy anyway to cut them out. Much better to do the real thing so if they do encounter polyops, they can remove them right then and there. With the virtual thing, you are only ahead if there are no polyops at all, which they say is a 60/40% gamble that you will -- if they find them, then you've got to do the colonoscopy anyway and it will cost you for both procedures rather than just the one.
