We actually add a $2 surcharge to passes and pre-paid tickets - if a customer wants to use a pass or discount ticket they must pay the extra $2, allowances are given to certain pass types. The explanation is that a pass or prepaid ticket covers a normal admission, not the special 3D ticket.

I think WB is worried more about giving away too many glasses -- I would hope they wouldn't care if there were a small percentage that were given out or "they came in damaged".

By the way David, do you have Real D or Dolby? I am interested in seeing it in Dolby to compare any difference, if I can find enough caffeine to stay awake through a second viewing of this monstrosity.

Ours are RealD too - I was hoping that maybe you had Dolby so we could compare . . . . . . I saw some Dolby content at a ShoWest demo and the 3D effect seems about the same - the glasses cost and the labor required was a turn off for us buying Dolby (as well as not being DoReMi compatible yet).

By my calculations RealD is the quickest to profit of the availalble 3D systems, although beyond 5 years the others start to catch up (but this depends on how many yearly releases come out in 3D) . . . . . but then when you look at multiple screens RealD bounces back and scales to multiple screens cheaper than the others.

Mark,

I was just going to ask why RealD hasn't adapted their technology to 35mm, and then realized that running at 1/3rd the frame rate would certainly amplify the effect that you notice in digital 3D.

Now if we could only get the eyes in sync. Of course you need two digital projectors for that too. Or maybe an over/under digital system would be good.
That is right around the corner. The Doremi and at least one other server have the studio's blessing to do two projector 3-D.

The real answer is because the studios and the technology companies are not going to invest in obsolete filum technology.

The dark time for triple flash is very critical and if memory serves me is only around 50us. Let all design a film projector er I mean film shredder with 50us pull down [Cool]

Journey to the Center of the Earth Wins on RealD 3D Screens: RealD 3D Brings in 55% of Estimated $21.02M Weekend

3D Screens over 3.7X Revenue of 2D Screens

RealD 3D, the world’s leading 3D experience, brought in 55% of the total box office for Warner Bros. Pictures/New Line Cinema’s Journey to the Center of the Earth, which earned an estimated $21.02M in its opening weekend.

“We are ecstatic with the performance of Journey to the Center of the Earth in 3D. The success of this film is propelling 3D to new heights and RealD has been a great partner and once again proven its power at the box office,” said Dan Fellman, President of Warner Bros. Distribution.

Michael Lewis, CEO RealD said, “This is a fantastic success for our colleagues at Warner Bros. and for our exhibitor partners with RealD 3D theaters. Journey to the Center of the Earth in RealD 3D took in an amazing and unprecedented 3.7 times the revenue of the 2D screens. It’s clear that audiences sought out the premium RealD 3D experience to enjoy this great summer movie. With over 5,500 RealD 3D screens committed to be installed in approximately the next two years, RealD has quickly established itself as a force in contemporary filmmaking and exhibition.”

Why are the powers that be so stupid? First, in many complexes the movie is probably playing ONLY in 3-D. Second, the target audience of this film would want to seek it out in Three Dee because that's the main attraction of this movie.

John Fithian says "you cannot have 3-D without d-cinema"

As I have mentioned before, I tend to get annoyed when reading anything that this guy writes or says, but this comment takes the cake for ignorance. It also isn't really clear to me why he is so eager for the number of [dlp] installations to increase, since it wouldn't really benefit exhibitors for every screen in the world to be 3D DLP equipped.
