Posts: 1219 From: Denver, Colorado Registered: Nov 2003 posted 10-28-2009 04:32 AM                        The XLR condenser mic(GT55) connects directly to the camera, if we had used the on camera mic it would have sounded WAY worse. The show is for shits and giggles, maybe to get noticed through word of mouth and get picked up for a real show... who knows. But we're not getting paid, its coming out of our own time and production setup we already have. Top mic audio almost always is just plain bad, even on the best high dollar professional video cameras. Too much ambient crap noise getting into the audio. Why even bother putting mics on those kind of cameras? It's like putting a weak-ass built-in flash on a pro-level D-SLR camera (the pros use speedlights and a lot of other stuff instead). If someone is going to use the camera's top mic he might as well not white balance so he can have blue looking video to go along with the crap audio. The only way I see top mic audio to be permissible is if you're shooting a basic "home movie" kind of video where any measure of professional quality doesn't matter at all. On top of that, good quality sound gear doesn't cost quite as much as the video gear. It's a lot better to clip a Lavalier mic on someone and have it wired into a tape deck or even directly into the camera (if the camera can take the input and balance it). quote: Joe Redifer This is page 10. Any professional sound guy is going to use a dedicated mic and audio deck for recording natural audio instead of pointing a video camera at the sound he wants to record. The only time where top mic natural audio serves any purpose is collecting B-roll footage for the 6 o'clock news. Look at the level of production quality at most TV stations in smaller viewing markets. It isn't all that great. Natural audio on news packages will often be top mic audio because the videographer isn't going to go to the trouble of carrying along a boom mic (much less bringing along an additional crew member to hold and point the damned thing). Thankfully the mics used by the news reporter dude can be plugged into the camera.
