A friend suggested I bring an air horn onto the plane and fire it off whenever a baby screams. This might scare the baby into silence (problem solved), or if not would certainly get the attendant's attention, to which I would reply "how is my air horn any less obnoxious than that screaming baby which you are doing nothing about?" I am DEFINITELY taking an SPL meter with me on the next flight and will document the results. Screaming will cause the air pressure in his ears to equalize faster. It's like pulling off the proverbial Band-Aid. A couple minutes worth of screaming to get the baby's ears settled is a small price to pay for the whole rest of the flight's worth of quiet. Moms with half a brain in their head will play with their kids during takeoff and landing. Laughing and playing does two things. It helps equalize the pressure and it keeps the kid's mind off any discomfort that does happen. A pacifier helps with some kids. If the kid is old enough, give him some candy. Brad, I know how annoying this is. I'm not saying you don't have the right to be peeved. BUT, you're just going to have to get used to this kind of shit. It's what kids do. There's not much you can do about it. The babies I fly with must be of a different breed than the babies you fly with. Its just human physiology. You're missing the point Randy. It is BAD PARENTING. These parents should have the common decency to respect others on the plane as well as their own child. I don't get angry when I am at a Chick-Fil-A and there is a baby screaming. Sure it can be annoying. Babies will scream and cry and I get that, but the difference is that at a place like Chick-Fil-A if the screaming is too much for me to handle I can always just leave. In an airplane I and another couple of hundred people are TRAPPED and there is no escape. The fact that there is already a high noise level on the plane is bad enough, but since it is a small enclosure the babies screaming becomes even more offensive to the ears since their noise cannot dissipate and on top of that because of the noise floor they scream even louder to be heard. The parents should not take their kids on the plane PERIOD. It is cruel to the passengers AND it is cruel to their infant. If there is anyone who would like to throw their 2 cents into this topic, please start a new thread. Thus, logically, I agree. It is bad parenting. I'm just saying that the first 5-10 minutes after takeoff and before landing are going to cause this in many, if not all babies. A certain amount of it is to be expected.
