Not really. Sure, most people who are fans of the franchise will say that KHAN is the best. But THE VOYAGE HOME was initially embraced by a much larger audience when it first came out.

Was SUPERMAN RETURNS a great movie? No. But it wasn't mind-numbingly stupid, which is more than I can say about any other Superman movie.

I never said anything about any movie being better than THE WRATH OF KHAN. All I said is that THE VOYAGE HOME and the new one are more popular.

What you describe sounds like the basis for a movie which is not better than the original, but just as good.
I would argue that the best sequels transport you to a place that the original didn't. That can mean a number of things. ALIENS, while not better than ALIEN, is one of the best sequels of all-time because it didn't feel like the same movie. It felt like its own movie. Then there are movies like THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, which does take you to the same place as the first movie. But instead of trying to recreate that experience, it builds on top of it to make something even better. And finally, there are movies like THE INCREDIBLE HULK, which learn from their predecessor's mistakes, and take you to places that the first movie tried and failed to take you.

How come I'm the only one who's getting his picks critiqued? How come no one's jumping all over Bobby for saying that PATRIOT GAMES is better than THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER? That's crazy talk.
And Joe, INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE? Seriously? It's like a decaffeinated version of RAIDERS. Sure, I'll take it if there's nothing else, but if you've got RAIDERS then you go with RAIDERS.
