Posts: 10973 From: Lawton, OK, USA Registered: Apr 2001 posted 11-21-2009 02:29 PM                     Orson Welles doesn't automatically come to mind for two reasons. 1: He did his best work over half a century ago. 2: He doesn't have many great movies in his body of work. Besides Citizen Kane, Touch of Evil and The Magnificent Ambersons it's difficult to name anything else Welles has directed. Overall I'd say Spielberg and Hitchcock. I used to say Lucas too, but he really isn't a good director. Storyteller, sure. He also killed any credibility as a director with the prequels. It's really the storyline and screenplay which is at fault for the flaws. He has what I like in a director...he gets people to look like they are not acting and you believe they are who they claim to be. I agree that in his more recent work, he used his movies to showcase his technology rather than "direct" and just tell the story. I agree that Hitch definitely deserves to be on the list...I dunno about Mr. Wells...probably though. He certainly changed film making, forever with Citizen Kane...I think that his best work was in his youth. My favorite for pure enjoyment of his films is Kevin Smith. I have thoroughly enjoyed every movie he has made. My list in no particular order: Stanley Kubrick Alfred Hitchcock Orson Welles William Wyler David Lean Francois Truffault Fritz Lang Buster Keaton For current directors: Werner Herzog Martin Scorsese Steven Spielberg Paul Verhoeven Peter Jackson David Lynch Cohen Brothers Francis Ford Coppola Wim Wenders Coppola is actually a tough one, since he has directed a number of not-very-good films, but it is tough to not include someone who has had such great successes ("The Godfather," "The Conversation," and "Apocalypse Now").  |  IP: Logged Bobby Henderson "Ask me about Trajan." Day For Night was the first foreign film I saw voluntarily and I was surprised I liked it. I doubt it holds up today. Nonetheless, we must continue to ask ourselves " Are movies real?
