I understand we don't say "And the winner is..." anymore because that would make everyone else feel like losers. Even though they did in fact ... lose. And now it seems we're dropping the word "Best" from the categories too. "The nominees for Best Director are" has turned into "The nominees for Achievement in Directing are..." Huh? Excuse me for a second... So I guess the other folks didn't "achieve" anything. In particular they didn't achieve "directing". Congratulations sir, you won an "Achievement". Good grief. I'm waiting for the "Some Guy We Like Because We Think He's Really Special Even Though He Didn't Accomplish A Freakin' Thing" Oscar. I bet we see that within 10 years. And when we do, you'll remember I called it right here. The fact that she spouted that word "accidentally" on the stage of the Oscars just tells you that she talks that way all the time. Classy. Oh well, I guess she'll be more famous for that now than she'll ever be for her acting. I thought we had escaped, but they keep dragging her back. When did she become a tradition? Thankfully it was for the Best of the Dead which doesn't need sound. Please tell me the kids at the end were special ed. And if anyone can figure out what the point was, please post. Anne Hathaway seems to auditioning for Julia Roberts goofier younger sister. Though the go-go gown was good. Franco appears to have just given up after appearing in drag. The laughs in the show can be counted on one hand missing two fingers. The Time Tunnel set joins the recent tradition of sets that don't make sense, are annoying to look at and totally wrong for film clips. I can't imagine what it looked like to the audience. The Bob Hope bit was just wrong. I thought it was especially nice how they were in cheap t-shirts and everyone else in the building was wearing tuxedos and such. All he got last night was a walk on stage with a couple other guys instead of a retrospective of a very long film career. Oh well. The Good, The Bad & The Ugly is one of my all time favorite movies and "Tuco" stole much of that show. There was a time when such an award was given substantial air time. These days, their idea of celebrating the history of motion pictures is to have old man Spielberg hand out an award. Those technical awards are usually the most interesting to me (and I'll never forget Johnny Carson's running joke over the award for the Acme-Dunn optical printer ), but those are the "boring Oscars," so we must now relegate them to the untelevised portion in favor of the vapid and vacuous. BTW, one of the other guys with Wallach was Kevin Brownlow. I'm guessing Leo was as pleased as I was to see him recognized. His work involving the history of silent film continues to inspire me. THE OSCARS for Uber-Fans: Every Award We've Got THE OSCARS for Movie Fans: All the Acting Awards but None of the Techno-Crap THE OSCARS for Geeks: None of that Boring Acting Crap, Just the Technicals THE OSCARS for People who Don't Like the Oscarcast: A two minute crawl with just the winners listed Another thing I think they could do would be to add a feed across the bottom of the screen, CNN-style, where live griping comments could be seen. The hosts could then comment on these comments. I think all the bleeping is sort of stupid because anybody from age five on up probably knows what's being said.
