That seems to be changing quite quickly though, at least in this neck of the woods. There are now 4-5 people I call regularly who do not have landlines in their homes, and several more who only have landlines because they need one to get ADSL internet, and don't even have a voice phone plugged into them.
I know this is probably a Europe-specific thing, but my problem with this is that it it's a cheap solution for the householder, but puts a lot of extra cost on anybody who wants to contact them. Here, the entire cost of calling a cellphone is borne by the person originating the call: from a UK landline, this can be up to the equivalent of 80-90 cents a minute during weekday working hours, while the owner of the cellphone you're calling pays nothing. Of course some landline contracts have inclusive deals that makes it a lot cheaper to call cellphones, and it's usually free to call between contract cellphones on the same network (a pernicious marketing device, of course, as it encourages whole extended families to go with the same provider). But even so, the costs can add up.

The phone bill of the university I work for got so bad a few years ago that they introduced a rule requiring students to provide a landline number that they could be contacted on, because virtually no shared students' houses have landlines in them and so they'd give their cell numbers on all the official forms. It didn't work, of course - they would just put their parents' number, and when you rang it you'd get Mummy or Daddy reading out their cell number and telling you to call that; and so they admitted defeat and dropped that rule. But the size of the bill must have been significant for them to want to try it in the first place.
