quote: Martin McCaffery As probably the only tourist in the history of Ireland to get a sunburn, I have avoided the sun since we moved from Hawaii in 1970.
Northern Europe doesn't get prolonged and intense sunlight very often, but it's by no means unheard of. And it's all the more dangerous when it does happen, because we're not expecting it and thus are not prepared for it. It's a similar syndrome to the infamous wrong kind of snow: because really extreme weather is very unusual, it's not worth the cost of being prepared for it, and so when it does happen it hits us a lot harder than other parts of the world where it's routine and therefore they have the means to deal with it. So when you do get very sunny periods, the media warn us over and over again about the sunburn risk, and of course the streets are full of people who look like they just stepped out of a microwave within a couple of days of the hot spell starting.
Interesting that the guy in the story Brad posted was a trucker, hence the skin damage on one side. Long drives in Southern California tend to make my pallid, northern European complexion go like a prune, too. I think part of it is that pretty much all cars in the US have air conditioning, and it's so effective that you get the sunlight without the heat while driving, and so I tend not to think about the sunburn risk.
