Northern Europe doesn't get prolonged and intense sunlight very often, but it's by no means unheard of. And it's all the more dangerous when it does happen, because we're not expecting it and thus are not prepared for it. I think part of it is that pretty much all cars in the US have air conditioning, and it's so effective that you get the sunlight without the heat while driving, and so I tend not to think about the sunburn risk.

Like truckers, pilots too face the same issue - long hours of exposure to the sun, made more intense for pilots by the thinner atmosphere at high altitudes. Many pilots wear long-sleeve shirts even on the hottest days just to have a little extra UV protection. You can sometimes tell what position a pilot has been flying by noting which side of the face is more tanned. Pilots have fairly high rates of skin cancer as well, compared to other lines of work.

I don't think they had invented cameras yet when Phil was a kid. [Big Grin]

I may have gotten it from him, I'm not sure. Seems like something he'd send. But it's been on my computer since 2002 according to the file creation date.

It's hard to see on my smart ass phone, but that projector looks like a 500 series B&H. I have a 535 modified for xenon.

Plain glass filters just about 100% of UV. He must have driven all those years with the window down.

I've always heard this, that you don't get sunburned through glass. But I am extremely fair and burn easily and I have gotten burned through car windows my whole life.

I think we all need a bit of sunshine, not to much though. Most projectionists I have come across are a bit "screwy" and I put this down to spending to much time in the projection room.

Without a bit of sunshine and fresh air, over time you could turn into a Morlock....remember "The Time Machine"

Me too. If plain glass will filter UV, then are the UV filters you buy for your camera lens just a sheet of window glass? I've just looked at mine and it does appear to have some sort of a coating on one side.

I suppose it could be the heat rather than the light that is doing some of the damage when you're driving in strong sunlight. If you've got the aircon running then that doesn't mean that the heat is not there; only that it's being dissipated faster.
