Author Topic: Computer mouse and keyboard preferences Justin Hamaker Film God Posts: 2253 From: Lakeport, CA USA Registered: Jan 2004 posted 05-12-2014 01:07 PM                        Regarding Num Lock, I hate the netbook computers which use letter keys as standard number pad as a secondary function, but have Num Lock on by default. I don't like that on my new laptop, the only home/end keys are on my the numerical keypad and when I hold down shift and hit end/home, it behaves as if I was going to "uppercase" and changing it to a 1/7 respectively.  |  IP: Logged Scott Jentsch Phenomenal Film Handler Posts: 1061 From: New Berlin, WI, USA Registered: Apr 2003 posted 05-14-2014 12:04 PM                        My favorite keyboard of all time was the old Keytronic "click" keyboard. I've had it for more years than I can count, and it still works. It came with the original keyboard connector, which I then got the PS/2 adaptor for. I finally gave it up when I discovered the Microsoft Natural Keyboard (with the split, angled configuration), but I still use the Keytronic on my old PC in the basement. Nothing lets me type faster than those spring-loaded keys! The biggest gripe I have with the Microsoft Natural Keyboard is the tendency for the key labels to wear off very quickly. I've gotten several replaced by Microsoft, even they they complain about not covering "wear and tear" under their warranty. In my opinion, a key label wearing off within months of installation is crappy design and manufacturing, not the result of normal wear and tear. In contrast, the key labels on that ancient Keytronic are still intact with no signs of wear. I'm currently using the Logitech Performance MX mouse. I like the weight and the feel, and I've really come to depend on the multiple buttons that are available, but I hate the incredibly short battery life that it has. The comment about a light colored mouse pad increasing battery life is something I am going to try, because it's very aggravating to get no more than a week's use before having to plug it in to recharge. (My old Performance Mouse used to last for months between recharges) I've also tried the Logitech Trackpad, and it's actually pretty good for a trackpad device. I really dislike laptop trackpads, but this standalone device is much better, and the support for finger gestures provides quite a bit of functionality. The biggest problem that I have with it is that I do a lot of copying and pasting of text, and selecting and dragging text is not very easy with a trackpad, so the mouse continues to be my primary pointing device.  |  IP: Logged Bobby Henderson "Ask me about Trajan." The keyboard is a thin, Dell-branded keyboard that came with my XPS desktop PC. It's ok I suppose. It's easier to keep clean than my last keyboard although it took some getting used to the thinner keys. I have a Wacom Intous tablet hooked up to my notebook at home. I've tried hooking it up at work, but it doesn't work all that great on a multiple monitor setup (the active area on the tablet turns into a very short, wide rectangle). Tablets kick ass for Photoshop & Illustrator use. The wireless, battery-less Wacom mouse is also very good. It's extremely accurate. I can do more precise work with it than my M510 laser mouse on my work PC.  |  IP: Logged
