Damn, Hillary, you have one beautiful, sexy mind, girl!
I too have said over and over that the surcharge for 3D is a killing field. But I guess it is hard to tell a bean counter he should stop charging extra when people are stepping up to pay extra.
quote: The question i have for 3D enthusiasts here is how do you feel about the fact that most 2D presentations are now ruined by silver or high gain screens? The question i have for 3D enthusiasts here is how do you feel about the fact that most 2D presentations are now ruined by silver or high gain screens? Do you care about losing pristine 2D images in these 3D ready theaters? Do you not appreciate the look of perfect 2D on a regular flat white screen? If we could have the formats coexist but separate i would stop feeling raped by 3D!
There I lament with you Victor -- silver screens in the movie theatre environment are awful; narrow rooms are not too bad -- we've got one in a theatre that is only as wide as the screen and the booth is only slightly higher than dead center. But go wider or higher and that tell-tale hotspot just sits there annoying the hell out of you through the whole movie.
BUT, that said, I really don't fault 3D for that because in theory, it's not the technology's fault that theatre owners made the decision to go the route they have. Then on the other hand, at least here in Brooklyn, none of the chains have silverized every screen in a complex. You can still see films in 2D on standard screens. In fact, let me shoot this question right back at you -- how many of the year's studios' output are in 3D? Surely MOST of the films you would WANT to see in a cinema are 2D films. And certainly you can see them in 2D rooms with white screens. Come on -- let's not exaggerate the silver screen issue. In the Regal Sheepshead Bay theatre here (which I go to because it's the best theatre in which to see a film in my area), of their 15 or 17 screens -- I can't recall actually how many they are up to now -- only 6 are 3Dized. So how is that being held hostage?
Now let's count the number of films last year that were actually of a quality that would warrant going out to a theatre. Well, just for argument's sake, let's say I would want to see ALL the Academy Award nominees. How many were in 3D? Not even a small minority -- AVATAR and UP. And that is a lot; there are not many AVATARs out there. And even if a few few 3D films came along that you might have wanted to see, I will bet you could find them on 2D screens as well as the 3D screens. So no, I don't agree that every screen in a multiplex has been silvered to the point where you couldn't see any 2D film you wanted in 2D and on a white screen.
So far films of certain caliber -- THE HURT LOCKER, INGLORIOUS BASTARDS, PRECIOUS, A SERIOUS MAN, BLIND SIDE, DISTRICT 9, THE LAST STATION, etc., etc. -- are not being made in 3D. Actually, there is only a very narrow type of film genre which will be viable in 3D. And even the most popular 3D titles like AVATAR could be found in 2D, many times within the same theatre complex, so no, I don't think anyone is getting raped with a silver screen.
Such a small output is in 3D and it will ever be so; I don't really know why all those who don't appreciate 3D get their pantyhose up in such knots. We get it -- you don't like 3D; you can't stand having to wear something as awful as glasses; the picture is way too dull; it's unnatural...you don't see real life like that; it gives you headaches, maybe even backaches. So what's really the issue? Just DON'T GO to see 3D movies you don't like -- let those who enjoy the 3D experience buy the tickets. When those who DO enjoy 3D STOP buying those tickets, Hollywood will stop making them. Problem solved.
