I can shoot 1080p/24 with my DSLR and it still looks just as much like video as the 6 o'clock news cast.
No it most certainly doesn't. Shoot 24p and 60p back to back of the same scene and then bump them together and watch them. One will have a very different feel than the other. True, it's not 100% the frame rate responsible for the film look, but I am not talking about the "film look" now am I?

Ironically, one of Ebert's most recentest blogs is about that 48 fps system (which he believes should put 3D to bed).
Now that's just stupid. 3D and frames per second are two entirely different entities. That's like saying he believes color should put an end to diarrhea.

And not all people notice differences in frames per second consciously. There are some people who cannot tell the difference between 15fps and 60fps. I did an experiment once where I had some videogame footage recorded at 30fps and 60fps into a Quicktime file. I asked people on the internet if they could tell the difference (same clip back to back, just one at 30 and one at 60). I think it was around 50-50 of those who could tell the difference and those who couldn't. But most still said they liked the 60fps clip better (which always works better for games).

Even without ever seeing it, I've always liked the concept of the 48fps Maxivision48 system, but after all these years, and with Roger Ebert's backing, they've never made any headway.

Now, they have to deal with the onslaught of Digital Cinema, so any proposal that actually involves using more film is not going to capture the attention of those who would like nothing more than put film in the archives.

The only chance they would have of making this system a reality is to do a roadshow of sorts, where they would demonstrate the Maxivision system to people in the hopes of creating a groundswell of demand. That's expensive and time consuming, and it would have to be a very well-planned strategy to succeed.

However, back to the original post, creating source material at 48fps and projecting it with digital cinema at 48fps sounds like a very good idea. In theory, it should produce temporal improvements (I think people notice 24fps-related issues more than they realize, but can't appreciate what it is that they're noticing) and if it can be projected at 48fps on a 4K system, that may be a format that would produce a noticeably better presentation.

Any major change like this is going to require influential people to make it happen. George Lucas did it with sound upgrades. James Cameron might have what it takes to get this pushed through, but it would be nice if he had the backing of directors like Christopher Nolan and cinematographers like Roger Deakins to provide extra support.

Cameron has forgotten that what makes a good movie is a good script, and good actors. Screwing around with 3D and different frame rates will not make a good movie.

Tom that doesn't mean shit, Cameron has forgotten what story means to a movie. Thats a simple fact. Just like the simple fact is he has the number 1 and 2 movies of all time.

I'm no Cameron fan, but I don't believe he has forgotten about story at all. He clearly chose a proven if timeworn story for AVATAR, tuned to satisfy the widest possible audience, with "good" and "bad" guys defined to a cartoonish degree (not unlike much of the artowrk). Several of the story elements also apply to his previous movie about the boat. He makes audience-pleasing movies which put asses in the seats.

I don't know if he's on the right track or not, but if nobody ever tried to improve motion pictures, we'd still be peering into kinetoscopes.

And he also released it in how many different formats, aspect rations, special editions etc? He is a pretty smart guy if you ask me.

I wish I saw it in IMAX Digital, but I didn't.

You can't say that about the "The Hurt Locker" where barely anyone went to see it.
