While I agree that seeing movies in a theater is the best way, and gets audience input while one is at it, many of the categories involved in the awards just aren't available to most of the award voters.
Limited release films, showing only in L.A. or N.Y. for a week can't get a representative number of voters to see them. Same with documentaries and short subjects.
Until very recently it is possible that the winners in these last categories were decided by under 500 voters out of over 6000 Academy members.
With the news of the posting of HATEFUL 8 on the internet, it would be interesting if someone came up with an estimate of how many people actually viewed it that way. An article in this morning's L.A. Times blamed some of the reason it has not done well at the boxoffice is because of this piracy. If true, this would mean that millions (literally) of people saw it on their computers.

I don't think anyone would argue that art/specialty films, or those with limited releases should not have DVD screeners. But sending out hundreds (thousands?) of screeners of a movie that's widely available to see in theaters is just asking for trouble.

If a movie came out in, say, October and wanted to be an Oscar contender, I could see where screeners might be necessary since the movie would likely be gone from most theaters. But something high-profile like "Hateful Eight" shouldn't have that kind of exposure problem.
