Author Topic: AMC's New Web Design Frank Cox Film God Posts: 2234 From: Melville Saskatchewan Canada Registered: Apr 2011 posted 12-04-2016 04:21 PM                        When you need someone to post an actual set of detailed instructions for how to get the information you want from a web page, that's a perfect demonstration of the problem with a setup like this. Front page: Pick a theatre. Next page: Here's a list of what's playing, choose the showtime you want. I remember getting this new computer and when all of the tablet like buttons popped up and it took me 15 minutes to figure out how to even find my calculator, I about threw it in the trash. 4 years later I still have issues even trying to print documents when it loads them into some weird viewing program. There's no print button??? It's not a bad concept overall, but it's ripe for abuse and very easy to screw up. The most common failure? Take the approach literally. Remove stuff until there's less, then blow up the size of what remains to fill in the gaps. They have the right idea at first, but seem to fall short on the "is more" part, which kind of defeats the purpose. Anyone remember the Zune software? Actually, anything related to the interface on the Zune applies. Microsoft's original approach, "metro," was really an amazing thing to behold. But it only worked because they didn't remove the actual content, only the chrome elements containing it. The content itself became the chrome. That is the proper way to do it. The information isn't just still there, it's presented in a clearer, much more intuitive fashion. They did so many things right with that design philosophy, and then proceeded to follow up on it with…Windows 8. See first paragraph. So yeah, AMC turned into Windows 8. Just tried checking the local AMC theatre's website. No movies available now and forever because "This theatre is closed for winter storms." Well, the storms missed us, and that was two days ago. And the theatre has been reporting to Rentrak. They, like us, didn't close for the threatened storms. I guess the web team goes home on weekends, and no one has bothered to check and see why they aren't getting web traffic. Or maybe everyone buys from Fandango, which is working. The Carmike theatre, whose website is now branded AMC though still the Carmike design is working fine. It's much easier to check show times at the Patriot 13 theater than the AMC branded Central Mall 12 theater. And the the premium "IMAX" screen show times are clearly labeled. The poster gallery concept of AMC's site re-design omits too much information. If you want to see a movie on a Dolby Cinema screen or IMAX-branded screen you have to fight AMC's site design pretty hard to get the information you're trying to find.  |  IP: Logged Justin Hamaker Film God Posts: 2253 From: Lakeport, CA USA Registered: Jan 2004 posted 01-09-2017 04:11 PM                        I checked out this AMC site on my phone. It looks fine, but it responds slow. I don't know if they are using too high of resolution on graphics, if they have too much background data, or if they are retrieving data from another server which is dealing with too much traffic. If I frequented an AMC theatre, I would probably just use the Fandango app to look up show times.  |  IP: Logged
