Author Topic: Theater declines request for captioning Dennis Benjamin Phenomenal Film Handler Posts: 1445 From: Denton, MD Registered: Feb 2002 posted 04-10-2017 05:24 PM                        I like this particular article much better (insert sarcasm): web page A movie theater deprived a group of deaf patrons the chance to watch “Beauty and the Beast” when the manager declined their request to turn on subtitles. Showcase Cinemas in Warwick, Rhode Island, has come under fire after it refused to turn on subtitles for a group of deaf people wanting to watch “Beauty and the Beast.” According to reports, 18 hearing-impaired people visited the cinema to watch the latest Emma Watson movie, but were turned back when the management refused to cooperate with them. The group’s leader Tom Riker elaborated upon the incident claiming the cinema’s manager argued that turning on captions would be unfair to other moviegoers at the theater. Now Riker hopes that state lawmakers will work on a legislation that would require theaters with at least eight screens to accommodate deaf and sight impaired customers. The legislation would further require specific theaters to turn on captions for movies at least twice a week. The general rule states that if hearing-impaired patrons make up majority of the people in a theater, and cannot be provided assistive eyeglasses, captions must be turned on. In this case, Showcase Cinemas did not have enough glasses for all 18 people, yet they refused to accommodate their request. The Massachusetts-based National Amusements, which owns the theater, hasn’t yet commented on the shameful incident. Sorry for the shouting. That this made national news should be shameful to the news industry, not the movie presentation industry. By the way, have any of you EVER had more deaf patrons in a theater than hearing-normal ones? I'd expect a journalist to check into the issue a bit and find that the DOJ recently reached a compromise solution after many years of consideration and reviewing hundreds of public comments. If you look at that article on the website and notice the "motto" of that site you can understand where they're coming from... but yeah, the whole thing is just sensationalistic click bait. The problem with those kind of sites is, people actually read and copy verbatim into their minds and start believing what's on there. For the next Firefox upgrade, I'd really love a mandatory bullshit indicator, glowing red-hot at those kinds of articles, much like a site with a broken SSL certificate.  |  IP: Logged
