Author Topic: Show more older movies Barry Floyd Phenomenal Film Handler Posts: 1079 From: Lebanon, Tennessee, USA Registered: Mar 2000 posted 09-07-2017 01:27 PM                        We did a "Retro Classics Weekend" at my drive-in a couple of weeks ago and came close to selling the place out on BOTH screens. We booked "Dirty Dancing" with "Road House" for a Patrick Swayze Double Feature, then on the other side we had two "baseball themed" flicks with "The Sand Lot" and "A League of Their Own". Not many stuck around for "A League of Their Own", but it didn't matter at that point. Looking at Rentrak / Comscore numbers for that weekend, we out-grossed every single drive-in in the middle Tennessee area AND out-grossed the local UEC 10 screen for the entire weekend... all with 30+ year old movies. Hoping the next time we do it we get great weather. Suspiria Fright Night The Dead Zone/ Pet Semetary The Monster Squad King Kong (1933)/ Them! That's our place (Bremerton, WA). Port Townsend is a different theatre. We've found that retro is a good fit for us on Labor Day weekend. We usually have a spare screen at that point in the season and, as others have reported, we do very well. We're going with the notion that retro works, so long as you don't go to the trough to often and wear out the novelty. Others do retro more often... some with good results, others... maybe not so much so. This year, both DCPs looked good, the inability to A/B compare with film notwithstanding. The sound on Jaws, predictably, sounded like screechy, band-limited, over-compressed optical. Nobody complained. The shark looked good.
