Author Topic: Plywood boxes on backsides of theater Marcel Birgelen Film God Posts: 3357 From: Maastricht, Limburg, Netherlands Registered: Feb 2012 posted 09-01-2018 03:16 PM                     For what it's worth, I've seen similar things made out of masonry stones, not in the U.S. but in Belgium. The screens feature three stage speakers though. The subwoofer also isn't located inside this "alcove" because they're using a bunch of terrible Bose acoustic cannons, mounted horizontally under the screens. Maybe the original idea, when this theater was constructed (which was already far into the SRD-era), was to put the subwoofer there.  |  IP: Logged Stephan Shelley Jedi Master Film Handler Posts: 854 From: castro valley, CA, usa Registered: Nov 2014 posted 09-01-2018 03:41 PM                     Out in the Bay Area here Lippert Theatres built there auditorums that way with the speaker in a metal box sticking out the back. This was even in the mid 70s The Crest Theatre in Sacramento is that way but made of concrete. You can tell the side ones are newer than the center. Obviously added when the theatre put in stereo. The Castro SF is an interesting one. Built in 1924 a silent house at the time the screen was on the back wall with fancy work around it. Behind where the current screen and speakers are. When sound was added they crudely jack hammered an opening and built a doghouse out over the neighbors back yard. The screen was finally moved forward to it current location for cinemascope.  |  IP: Logged Stephen Furley Film God Posts: 3059 From: Coulsdon, Croydon, England Registered: May 2002 posted 09-16-2018 06:46 AM                     I’ve seen speaker boxes on the back walls of cinema buildings, but never on modern ones. I can think of two not far from me, both now demolished after decades of closure or alternative use, but they were old silent houses which had the boxes added when they were converted for sound. At least one of these had doors in the back, I never got close enough to the other to see.  |  IP: Logged
