There's no room for any "run down shacks" on Avenue J in Brooklyn. That wasn't even the case when I lived just off Avenue M during my senior year of college nearly 30 years ago. You would be hard-pressed to find a building any shorter than 3 or 4 stories tall in that neighborhood. If anything, the buildings in that part of Brooklyn have been renovated, all due to the mass gentrification and real estate property speculation that has infected the whole region.

Of course, even back at the end of the 1980's I could go out to a news stand in the Midwood section of Brooklyn at zero dark thirty in the morning and not have the slightest concern of worry since the neighborhood watch setup there was first rate. And this was back when the 5 boroughs were seeing 2000+ homicides per year, not the below 300 number NYC set for 2018 (with 8.5 million residents in those boroughs compared to 7.2 million in 1990). That's probably more of a statement of the effects of gentrification and income inequality than anything. You pretty much have to be rich in order to afford living within New York City limits now. The riff raff has largely been exported to other places. I have some theories on it. Memphis and St Louis are a hell of a lot worse than those cities used to be. Same goes for New Orleans. Seattle is turning into a massive homeless camp. It goes on and on from there.

You've never been to the hipster phenomenon called Di Fara then. Because, that pretty much is a run-down shack on the corner of Ave J and E 15, that hasn't seen any serious renovation for at least 40 years. And there are no problems with the neighborhood, which is paramount, because you'll be hanging around for a while if you want to actually eat there...

According to Internet lore, they sell about the best pizza in the entire universe. Taste is a personal thing, but I've gotten equal or better slices or pies for less money and with less fanfare all around town.

And there be the culprit -- internet lore, which is like saying "according to unverifyable jibberish..."

Like I said, the place hasn't been cleaned in those 40 years, possibly why it failed health inspection multiple times (along with that pesky rodent infestation, will do it every time) and as recently as last month -- failed and closed. So anyone who is silly enough to stand outside in line for up to an hour in whatever the weather du juor happens to be, just to pay $5 for a single, burnt slice plus be treated with disdain on top of it...have at it.
